Expect free entrance on 18 and 19 March 2017 to the City of Cape Town
Last Update 13 March 2017
The Table Bay Nature reserve is hosting an open weekend from 18 to 19 March 2017, to coincide with the Milnerton Aquatic Club's 24-hour endurance sailing challenge at the Rietvlei Water Area.
Table Bay Nature Reserve, one of the 16 nature reserves run by the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department, protects about 880ha of various permanent and seasonal wetlands, as well as Cape Flats dune strandveld and Cape Flats sand fynbos vegetation types.
Besides the water activities at Rietvlei, the reserve also offers visitors wildlife photography, bird-watching and nature-based environmental education programmes, as well as offering picnicking and braaing facilities at designated areas. The reserve is home to 412 plant species, 31 species of mammal, 196 bird species, 33 reptile species, 9 species of amphibian and 14 fish species.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area North, Councillor Suzette Little stated that, “While the general public will not be permitted to practise water sports within the recreational water area during the 24-hour sailing challenge over the weekend of 18 and 19 March 2017, spectators and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to access the nature reserve free of charge.”
Due to the limited parking, spectators and visitors are encouraged to use public transport or to arrive on foot. The MyCiTi bus stops along Blaauwberg Road are about a kilometre from the main entrance.
Another bonus is that, “Everybody can travel for free on the MyCiTi bus service on 19 March 2017. This free travel is available all day long – from the morning when the service commences, until the evening when the last buses depart. Commuters do not need a myconnect card to travel on the bus on this day. Furthermore, passengers can make as many trips as they wish, on any bus and on any route for as long as the service is operational. This is a great opportunity for residents and tourists to visit the nature reserve and to get first-hand experience of how easy and convenient it is to use the MyCiTi service to go places around Cape Town” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport and Urban Development, Councillor Brett Herron.
