Camps Bay sunbathers strike a frozen pose.
Last Updated: 29 November 2016
Two years ago we had the viral ice bucket challenge, but now it’s the Mannequin Challenge that’s causing an even bigger online buzz.
The Mannequin challenge is a new video trend that captures people imitating mannequins, usually with the song “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd playing in the background. Once the video has been recorded and edited, social media users share their creativity by uploading it with the hashtag #MannequinChallenge. On social media the challenge is compared to similar online trends such as the Harlem Shake.
In Cape Town, more than 200 people participated in a Mannequin Challenge filmed in Camps Bay. Calvin Munhuweyi took six minutes to shoot the video, while Craig Harrison filmed behind the scenes with a drone. Calvin and Richard Haubrich briefed 50 people on their game plan. “I figured that if we could get 50 people to brief four people each, it would make life easier,” Calvin added. The pair, along with 50 people convinced every person on Camps Bay beach in on the act. “Everybody had five minutes to prepare their poses and everyone was amped.” At 3pm Sunday, 27 November 2016, the whistle blew and everyone held their pose for five minutes. This is Cape Town’s Mannequin Challenge:

The trend is believed to have started October 12, 2016 Jacksonville Florida, by a few teenagers in a high school. The clip below is one of the first Mannequin Challenges posted.
