Lunch at Caveau on Bree Street is Simply Chilled

Stop and savour the simplicity of it all at Caveau Wine Bar and Deli in Cape Town

There’s something special about a spot that caters to business men looking for a quiet solitary lunch, middle-class families with empty bellies, and girlfriends looking to bond over a bottle of wine. Caveau Wine Bar and Deli on Bree Street is the place where the sophisticated meet to unwind.

Whether you are a mother with children in tow or a young professional with friends in tow you will feel right at home.

When you first walk through Caveau’s double dark wood doors you are immediately hit by its warmth and simplicity. While you might be tempted to write it off as pretentious there is something about the space that makes you feel comfortable and at home.

Dark wood tables and chairs
contrasted with soft avocado green suede booth-like couches, moments of exposed face bricked walls, and aged photographs of Heritage Square all work together to create a casual ambience that will have you staying firm in your seat for hours.

The restaurant’s welcoming
atmosphere makes you feel content and at ease whether you are having lunch alone or in a party of ten.

Their minimalist approach when it comes to food and decor draws your attention to what Caveau is really about – wine, wine, wine.

The eatery’s relatively bare yellow-washed walls are adorned with bottles of wine, wine barrels casually form part of the decor, and the overall rustic feel of the rooms gives you the feeling of dinning in an intimate wine cellar.

Situated in Heritage Square Caveau is steeped in history and the building still has its original feel, both outside and in. In keeping with its relaxed atmosphere Caveau’s wine list is uncomplicated and even the most unashamed wine philistine will find it easy to order a glass or two to suit their meal.

Caveau’s unusual deli-like approach to restaurant eating allows for a tailor-made lunch. With their daily main menu informally chalked on blackboards one gets the feeling that Caveau offers something different each time you visit.

Offering everything from simple couscous salads to bratwurst and bubble and squeak the Bree Street restaurant’s menu caters to the most finicky of taste buds. On the off chance you don’t find something you like you can order customised sandwiches from their well-stocked deli.

If you are looking for something light and tasty we recommend the vegetable frittata with side salad. Set on a simple square white plate it’s delicious and uncomplicated.

Caveau also have a great selection of desserts to suit your after-mains appetite. Indulge in hand-made chocolate truffles, bread and butter pudding, or chocolate cheese cake. This Cape Town restaurant’s chocolate truffles are a great way to end your meal on a sweet note even if you don’t have much space left for dessert.

Lunch for one, including a glass of wine and truffles, was just over R80.00 – well worth it for the overall Caveau experience.

The beauty of Caveau is that it sucks you in and encourages you to stay and unwind. After my meal had long gone and two empty paper baking cups were all that was left of my chocolate truffle dessert I couldn’t help but sit and just sip my wine a while longer.

Caveau isn’t about quick in-and-out lunches, or fifteen-minute coffees with the girls. It’s about long conversations over a bottle of wine and savoured lunches with close friends.

Lunch at Caveau on Bree Street is the perfect answer to a hectic day. Caveau makes busy businessmen down their blackberries and frantic families pause to break bread with loved ones.

Plain and simple: Lunch time at Caveau Wine Bar and Deli is simply chilled. So sit back, relax, and enjoy.
