NICE TO MATCHA

…Is the name of Sea Point’s latest addition. You’ve probably seen this blow up on your Instagram and TikTok. The self-proclaimed “calm caffeine fix” is made with organic ceremonial grade matcha. Flavours include strawberry, vanilla bean & sea salt, mango and more. Plus, it’s only made with dairy-free alternatives.

Must-try: African ginger lemonade matcha

TRY LUKE’S GRANNY’S MALVA 

New at the Oranjezicht Market is Smoor, a boerie stand serving “the best wors in town.” There’s items like Lamb Boerie (dhania smoor, labneh and crispy onion) and Luke’s Granny’s Malva (koesister malva pudding and Ultramel ice cream). Look out for their orange sign and white doilies at the Wednesday Night Markets. 

Must-try: The Smoor (beef boerie, smoked tomato smoor, onion marmalade, crispy garlic)

PEDAL BOATS ALL THE WAY FROM ITALY

Pedal Boat Cape Town brings the new boat on the block, all the way from Italy. This summer water activity is suitable for all ages and sessions are 30 minutes. Each pedal boat seats two to five adults. It’s based in Battery Park, so after pedalling your boat through the canals at the V&A Waterfront, you can explore the skate park.

SAFARI FOR WINE LOVERS

With Durbanville Wine Safari, you can explore this lush wine valley by safari vehicle, tasting some of the region’s finest wines at Nitida Wine Estate, Maastricht Wine Estate, Durbanville Hills and more. Grab your friends and spend the day doing their Hop-on-Hop-off safari and curate your own wine route.

BOWLS OF RAMEN THAT TELL A STORY 

From culinary masters Rikku O'Donnchu and Warwick King, Yatai - Ramenbar brings the heart of Japanese street food to Bree Street. Inspired by classic Japanese food stalls known as Yatais, Yatai - Ramenbar promises rich broths, hand-pulled noodles, and mouth-watering toppings in every bowl. It’ll be below Nikkei with an opening date to be announced soon.

FLOUR MARKET IN GARDENS 

Situated in Gardens, Flour Market is the latest gem from David Donde, founder of Truth Coffee and Rapt. While you wait for the grand opening of Flour Market, you can order their treats on Uber Eats (custard danishes, chocolate eclairs, all day breakfast and more). It’s opening in October 2024.

TOUCHED BY FIRE AT THE ONE&ONLY 

One&Only Cape Town’s newest restaurant, ROOI, showcases ingredients from land and sea that’s infused with local flavours and traditions. Inspired by the vibrant essence of a classic braai, ROOI has menu items like lamb shank potjie, masala spiced kingklip fillet and peri peri spatchcock chicken.

Ditto and Grumpy & Runt are now under one roof at Ditto’s flagship store on Kloof Street. You’ll still find Ditto’s oat milk-based ice creams and waffles, with the new addition of Grumpy & Runt’s vegan donuts and sandos. Expect flavours like chocolate lava donut (filled with fudgey chocolate lava and topped with chocolate brownies).

TADAA! IS HERE 

You’ve probably seen this new ice cream shop on your socials, and for good reason. Tadaa! Ice cream is all-natural with 20 flavours available. Some are pretty unique, like Vietnamese coffee, grapefruit cinnamon, blueberry mascarpone, and licorice and white chocolate. The decor feels like childhood nostalgia with bright pink walls and a melting disco ball.

Yes, you read that correctly. Cloud Café at the Old Foundry is a conscious café and 0% bar offering non-alcholic drinks designed to “deliver a natural high”. There’s options like the Cloud 9, Blissful Beet and Matcha Mule. It’s also has a gluten-free bakery and coffee bar, underground cinema, tech-free first Thursday events and more.

CAPE TOWN’S FIRST MUSEUM FOR DOGS 

You’ll find it in one of the city’s 350-year-old buildings. Karel van der Vyver opened a museum where you can learn the history of dogs in South Africa, see a photography exhibition, ceramics display and read stories on memorable mutts (including famous presidential dogs). There’s also a listen station and of course, the museum is dog-friendly too.

CLASSIC PUB GRUB ON KLOOF NEK 

New on Kloof Nek Road is a public house with a cosy feel. From the dark wood interiors to the decorations in the form of rugby balls and hanging fish, The Twelve Bells has a classic pub vibe. There’s a wide variety of drinks and classic pub lunches like fish and chips. You can find favourites like Bells, Jameson and Guinness. The menu changes often so be sure to check the daily food items.

TRY SPANISH TAPAS AND WINES 

From chef Dian Botes, head chef of Una Más Mezcalería, is a new spot for tapas and wine. Qué Linda Restaurante is all about Spanish authenticity. On the menu you can find traditional Paella and wine varietals using Spanish grapes. 

Must-try: Basque cheesecake (Spanish burnt cheesecake, spiced berry compote and dolce de leche)

CHEEKY GEM IN WELLINGTON

Neon signs, boho fringe lamp shades and drag shows. And yes, it’s in Wellington. A trip to Festa is well worth the drive. It’s found next to Kleinevalleij, the wedding venue on the Bainskloof Pass. In the day there’s a classic café feel, while at night it turns into a party with various events like drag shows and live performances from local artists like Jeremy Loops.

COY IN THE V&A WATERFRONT

Fine dining small plates in a relaxed environment at the V&A Waterfront, COY was right to announce itself an “ocean-inspired, African-led dining experience”. It is the new invention from chef Ryan Cole, of Salsify at the Roundhouse.

The location is fitting to the name: It’s seemingly hidden in plain sight at the water’s edge in the building many will -for the time being- only know how to direct you to if you ask for "The bridge that takes me from the Watershed to The Cape Grace".

TRY SA’S FIRST AMPHIBIOUS BUS

Ever heard of an amphibious bus? It’s a bus that doubles as a boat, and the first one in South Africa has arrived in Cape Town. Boarding at the Silo District, you’ll pass the Cruise Terminal before heading onto the water where you’ll see city sights like the V&A Marina and a seal platform and aquarium.

TASTE “GREEN TOAST”

It’s Sea Point’s latest all-day café. On the menu you’ll find breakfast sandwiches, fried chicken sandos, prego fillets and more. Currently you can bring in your own wine and beer as Maggy Lou’s doesn’t have a liquor licence. Inside there’s plants, wooden furniture and outdoor seating too. It’s lovely and cosy, just like a friend’s living room.

This 1920s grand home, transformed into a boutique hotel, is brimming with character and charm. STEP INTO A SCENE FROM MIAMI VICE 

One of Cape Town’s hottest Mexican spots, Mamacita’s, has a new sister: Mama’s Margaritaville. The Kloof Street eatery looks just like a scene from Miami Vice with its cheeky neon signs, palm trees, surf boards and graffiti across the walls. The menu is Tex-Mex with options like deep-fried pickles, corn dogs and birria ramen.

What used to be Safehouse is now a Mexican cocktail bar called Flirt. With its Día de los Muertos theme and live salsa music, it’s the latest hotspot. On the menu you can find all the favourites including birria tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and more. Happy hour is every day from 5pm to 7pm, and on Tuesdays there’s all-you-can-eat nachos for R199.

THE NEW KID ON LONG STREET

Recently opened in the city centre is a new coffee collective, Hey Stranger. Inside you’ll find marble counters with wooden tables, green plants, and a stacked pastry case. There's poppy seed loaves, pecan pies, toasted sandwiches, vegan cakes, and more. For the non coffee-drinkers there are various teas and matcha lattes.

From the chef who brought you Lucky Bao and Bang K, Cheyne Morrisby’s latest creation is Hiro Izakaya, an informal saké restaurant. It’s a Japanese bar at Constantia Uitsig with a wide covered front verandah, banquettes, and a semi-private dining space by the open kitchen. There’s unique dishes like fish finger hand rolls, duck egg Caesar and udon carbonara.

Local coffee roasters Espresso Lab have opened a new branch called their Coffee Atelier. From the unique decor mixed between granite, wood and metal to the moving signs and exquisite pastry case, it's buzzing with popularity. There’s pastries like tiramisu cake rolls, brioche croissant sandwiches, cardamom buns and more at Espresso Lab.

Café meets yoga studio at this new collaboration space in the southern suburbs. Rise Studios has just opened in Bergvliet, and paired up with staple coffee shop Home Café to create an on-the-go exercise and breakfast space. Yoga sessions run from 5.15am, and take 18 people per class. And afterwards you can grab a coffee with homemade caramel granola cups or Fererro Rocher energy balls.

Kanji Ramen is the latest addition to Cape Town’s ramen scene. TASTE SOURDOUGH FROM A 350-YEAR-OLD RECIPE

One of the oldest bakeries in Germany, Erbelrot, is now part of a new bakery in South Africa, Bäckerei. There’s freshly-baked German artisan sourdough, crafted with a 350-year-old family recipe that takes 18 to 36 hours to produce. Not only is it available for you to take home, but it's also on the menu for breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Subject to availability.

WINE HOPPING IN STELLENBOSCH

If you’re looking for a unique way to go wine tasting, Wine Tractor is just that. Starting at Eikendal Wine Estate, you can hop on and off across six hidden gem wine farms like Webersberg Estate and Grangehurst Wine Estate. The route takes you through farm roads (not main roads), meaning you can see horses and blue cranes on the wine tractor

SMALL PLATES IN CONSTANTIA

It’s the new kid on the Constantia Uitsig block. Ember and Oak is an unconventional experience, hoping to rewrite the rules of dining. Ember and Oak (from Tim Pick, who worked at La Colombe) has a short menu of small plates like yellowtail ceviche puri and Yakitori wings in a gochujang glaze. Sit outside on the terrace tables of Constantia Uitsig and share plates with mates.

TSHISHANYAMA IN THE CBD

They call themselves a “tshishanyama that went to private school.” PriMEATive is the city’s newest tshishanyama spot. A working space with free wifi by day and casual hangout by night. They have happy hour specials (from 6pm to 7pm), savoury spitbraais and a selection of craft beers on offer, with live music and DJs. You can also join them for First Thursdays, with artists like Tankiso Mamabolo or DJ Dilish at PriMEATive

COMING TO CAPE TOWN: MARBLE

They call themselves the meat and flame enthusiasts. Luxury bar and restaurant, Marble, arrives in Cape Town in spring 2024. Marble originally opened in Johannesburg by renowned South African chef David Higgs, where dining is a theatrical experience and the food is cooked on a direct fire. Marble in Cape Town unveiled their new location at the historic Union Castle Building in the heart of the V&A Waterfront.

ONE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST SPECIAL CAFÉS

You’ll find Only Specials Café in Hermanus next to Daans Bakery. With patterned floors and a pretty garden setting, sit indoors or outside where tables are shaded by umbrellas and trees (and eucalyptus leaves are painted on the walls). The café hires special needs individuals as part of their partnership with The Sluyter Foundation, to train intellectually challenged students from Camphill. COFFEE SHOP IN A CHURCH COURTYARD

Pauline’s, a popular coffee shop on Sea Point’s main road, has opened a new location in De Waterkant, in the backyard of Sacred Heart church. The intimate space has high vaulted ceilings, arched windows, wooden benches and an outdoor courtyard, mimicking the feeling of a church. There’s fresh pastries, coffee and breakfasts like spiced chelsea buns, smashed avo toast or a burrata salad.

MONTREAL-STYLE COFFEE AND BAGELS

Montreal is a new artisanal bagel and coffee shop in Stellenbosch. You can build your own bagels or choose flavours like Nutella, cream cheese, blueberry and the Montreal. Something truly special about this new coffee joint is the CAN IT concept, where coffees are made and freshly-canned in store. Choose between four different sizes, from Mini Monte, Jacaranda, Jozi or Mother City.

New to Bree Street, where Nish-Nush used to be, is another hole-in-the-wall burger eatery. Burgers and Brews feels like an old school takeout spot, with a little order window, red tile decor, and a few white tables on the sidewalk. There’s American-style smashburgers, animal fries, milkshakes and beers (and it’s open till midnight). Plus, there are specials every First Thursdays.

A hidden courtyard just off Plein Street in Stellenbosch is now the home of brand new noodle bar, Slurp. ARGENTINIAN BAKERY WITH PASTERELAS

Weirdough serves medialunas, an Argentinian pastry that's a mix between a brioche and a croissant, with many layers and a subtle hint of lemon and vanilla. Along the Camps Bay strip you’ll find a beach club with rattan and wood interiors, South African treats and specialty drinks. There’s Apricot snoek and vetkoek. Located in the Tokyo Building, Florentin is a breakfast and brunch spot that offers dishes like shakshuka, turkish eggs and kıyma. With orange walls, round wooden tables and brown leather booths, the menu is structured around a selection of sharing plates and dishes. Pop in and get some work done (with free Wi-Fi) or grab coffee and pastries on the go. (Note: they’ll be open for lunch and dinner soon).

ICE CREAM BAGUETTES, ANYONE?

Pho and Bun Halal Vietnamese Kitchen in Diep River is a new local spot where you can try Vietnamese cuisine (and vegan-friendly options too). With bamboo straw hats hanging from the ceiling and greenery climbing up the walls, try Pho (a Vietnamese specialty, made of rice noodle soup) and Bún Thit Núóngh (vermicelli noodles, grilled meat and salad). There are tons of bars in Cape Town, but how many of them have an arcade? Barcadia is Cape Town’s first retro bar and arcade, and they’ve got a collection of original arcade game machines, some going back as far as 30 years.
