The Old Oak Road bridge will be demolished leaving the N1 highway closed
Last Update 9 May 2017
The Mother's Day weekend that lies ahead has a road closure waiting for it. The N1 inbound between Old Oak Road and the R300 interchange will be closed from 7pm on Friday, 12 May 2017 until 5am on Monday, 15 May 2017. The closure is a result of the safe demolition of the western portion of the Old Oak Road Bridge.
The Department of Transport and Public works have navigated this project in an attempt to extend the third lane on the N1 from the west of Durban Road to beyond the Old Oak Interchange. Luckily the demolition will take place over the weekend in order to prevent extensive traffic disruptions to Capetonians.
The western bridge which carries traffic northbound was constructed in 1963, making it the project of the Western Cape to rebuild in order to meet the current clearance requirements needed to construct a third lane. The Old Oak crossing consists of two bridges, which each carry two lanes of traffic - adding a third lane to this bridge will ease traffic congestion dramatically. The eastern bridge which was built in 1993 will still be in use.
Here is a breakdown of the detour routes you can take to avoid the closed N1 highway;
N1 outbound (north) to N1
Exit at Old Oak interchange (Exit 25), left onto Eversdal Road, right onto De Bron Road (M73), right onto Okavango Road (M137), left onto N1.
N1 outbound (north) to R300
Exit at Old Oak interchange (Exit 25), left onto Eversdal Road, right onto De Bron Road (M73), right onto Brackenfell Boulevard, right onto Old Paarl Road, left onto R300.
N1 inbound (south)
Travel onto R300 (south), exit at Bottelary Road Interchange (M23), right onto Bottelary Road, right onto R300 (north), take Old Paarl Road interchange (Exit 29), left onto Old Paarl Road (R101), right onto Old Oak Road, left onto N1.
Also note that Eversdal Road will be changed to a one-way for the duration of the closure to accommodate traffic. For safety reasons, the eastern Old Oak Bridge will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic during the demolition.
