5-star rooms, Indian fine dining and Lobby Lounge & Bar
Last updated: Thursday, 11 May 2023
From the textures and cuisine right down to the excellent service, Taj Cape Town is without question one of the city’s most luxurious hotels. Steeped in rich heritage, the hotel is opulent: It has marble columns, wallpaper with gold accents, beautiful brass details, sparkling crystal and blown-glass chandeliers, and 176 refined rooms.
Explore the city from Taj Cape Town’s doorstep. It’s located in the centre of the old city, within walking distance of some of Cape Town’s most famous sights. Image: Taj Cape Town
Taj Cape Town is situated in a prime and historic location just outside Company’s Garden Arch entrance and within walking distance to some of South Africa’s top landmarks, as well as Cape Town’s many shops, restaurants and excellent galleries.
The Grand Presidential Suite extends across two levels and has spectacular views of Table Mountain from all areas, including the upstairs balcony. Image: Taj Cape Town
Its spacious and opulent rooms come with iconic views of Table Mountain or the sparkling city skyline and will suit your needs whether you’re travelling for leisure or business. The 5-star hotel also has world-class function rooms in gorgeous landmark heritage buildings, with business facilities and services that will allow any meeting to run seamlessly.
Its distinctive Indian style is what sets Taj Cape Town apart, from the award-winning Jiva Spa, where reviving treatments begin with a beautiful cultural ritual, to the Bombay Brasserie, arguably one of Cape Town’s top Indian restaurants.
Located in the Heritage Wing, these luxury rooms offer large sash windows that overlook the famous Table Mountain. Image: Taj Cape Town
Everything about this iconic hotel is a feast for the senses. In the Jiva Spa, there are hot compresses made out of Indian herbs, and silky milk rinses. The Bombay Brasserie serves authentic Indian cuisine, and the country’s national bird, the peacock, graces the walls in rich blues and greens and golds.
All one-bedroom suites at Taj Cape Town have floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that lead out onto private balconies overlooking charming views of the city. These are contemporary, decorated in rich, warm tones, and have extra-length, king-size beds, as well as a separate living room and an area to work in. There are plush carpets underfoot and the bathrooms are clad in marble, with large walk-in showers and roomy bathtubs.

The Luxury Heritage Rooms have a charming feel, with large sash windows, leather headboards and a vintage feel. These rooms also overlook the iconic and impressive St George’s Cathedral.
Taj Cape Town is built on two opulent heritage sites: The original South African Reserve Bank and former lawyers’ rooms, the Temple Chambers, as well as the Board of Executors. These have been seamlessly integrated with Taj Cape Town’s luxurious modern additions.
The original grand Bank Hall, The Reserve, allows for a variety of event formats within its marble interior and high ceilings. Image: Taj Cape Town
The grand lobby, formerly the Reserve Bank’s banking hall, has retained the original barrel-vaulted skylight and the marble columns have been immaculately restored.
The Chairman’s Office is now the Whiskey Lounge, right next door to the plush, gold-accented Lobby Lounge & Bar. The Reserve is the city’s most iconic venue for business functions, with numerous rooms to accommodate events of any size, from banquets to conferences.
The Taj Cape Town, with its elegant suites with dazzling views of the city and many choices of function venues, makes for a majestic inner-city wedding. There’s also the fact that The Taj is located right next to Cape Town’s most historic cathedral and gardens, and houses one of the best spas and a grand lobby lounge, with its bespoke Whiskey Lounge (bridal and bachelor party venues sorted).

There are numerous ways to enjoy Taj Cape Town without having to stay. You can dine at the Bombay Brasserie, which is without a doubt one of Cape Town’s finest restaurants (read more about it below). There’s also Mint Restaurant and Wood-Fired Grill, an inviting option for a business lunch or to meet with friends for a light meal.
The Lobby Lounge and Bar is the perfect place to unwind with cocktails. Image: Taj Cape Town
The Lobby Lounge and Bar is a refined spot to mingle over pukka cocktails, such as gin and tonics and whisky sours, as well as more innovative concoctions.
At the sophisticated Whiskey Lounge, with exposed brick walls and an elegant dark wood display of whiskey bottles, you can have a grand whiskey tasting journey that takes you from India to Taiwan, Scotland to Ireland, America to Japan and beyond and tastings are completely customisable.
Choose from themed tastings (some come with tapas-style pairings) or customise your own. Image: Taj Cape Town
The Bombay Brasserie is one of only three in the world, the others being in London and Dubai. Its fine-dining Indian and South African cuisine is suitable for any palate. The menu includes an array of small plates and exquisitely spiced bites.
There are loads of options for vegetarians and vegans. Find out more about the Bombay Brasserie experience.

There’s also Mint Restaurant and Wood-Fired Grill, which opens out onto St George’s Mall. It has a strong South African influence, and is more of an easy everyday lunch spot: You’ll find seafood potjie, smoked snoek and springbok carpaccio on the menu.
On sunny days tables are placed outside, and you can eat reimagined pap and wors (pap arancini balls with grilled wors and chakalaka) or a masala steak burger under shady umbrellas.
Mint Restaurant & Terrace opens out into St George’s Mall and is an inviting space for lunch, while the mezzanine level is perfect for tea or coffee and delicious cake. Image: Taj Cape Town
At the award-winning rejuvenating Jiva Spa, all treatments begin with the nurturing ritual washing of your feet in a big, brass bowl. Massages, facials, pedicures and manicures are all on offer and you can book a unique experience, such as Indian cupping or a supremely relaxing Indian foot or head massage. Also, there are many unique treatments on offer, such as the special Soma couple’s experience. You’ll experience Indian wellness at Jiva Spa.

The smaller meeting rooms in the former Chambers are popular, and have all the modcons, including comfortable and supportive office chairs. All the rooms also have interesting historical memorabilia, from framed photographs of “old” Cape Town to fascinating articles on important personages.
