The first Queer Feminist Film Festival in Khayelitsha

This event offers a safe space for reflecting on queer issues

If queer and feminist issues resonate with you be sure to check out the Queer Feminist Film Festival (QFFF) taking place at the Bertha Movie House in Khayelitsha on Friday, 19 and Saturday, 20 January 2018.

A collaborative initiative by the Bertha Movie House, the African Gender Institute, the Triangle Project and OXFAM South Africa, this film festival seeks to offer a safe space for reflection on these issues. Simultaneously QFFF offers a platform which recognises and celebrates the work and concerns of queer feminist activists.

While the films are the main feature at the event, OFF also honours the work of queer local artists, poets, musicians and cultural influencers, who are invited to showcase their work during the event. Queer entrepreneurs and artisans can also sell their goods at QFF.

FILMS SHOWING AT THE QUEER FEMINIST FILM FESTIVAL IN KHAYELITSHA

Winnie, a documentary about the life and times of Winnie Mandela, is set to be one of the highlights at the festival. Similarly, Simon and I is sure to be very popular. The film is an intimate portrait of Simon Nkuli, a South African black gay rights activists and his protégé Bev Ditsie. Also make sure to not miss Displaced: Black and Queer, directed by Siv Greyson and Ncumisa Mdlokolo, which explores the realities of trans and queer lives and how these realites intersect with blackness in Africa.

Please note: In order to make this a full inclusive event, there will be transport provided for both days of the QFFF. Get in touch with event organisers and drop them your location and they will get back to you with the details. There will be two pick up points, one in the Southern Suburbs and one in Khayelitsha. More details will be revealed closer to the time. Also note that this is bigot-free event and as such, it will not be tolerated.
