Where is the best place to get a delicious gourmet milkshake? We know!
Last update: 23 May 2018
My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,
And they’re like, it’s better than yours
Damn right, it’s better than yours,
I can teach you but I’ll have to charge
Cape Town, to us, boasts some of the best restaurants in the country and if you’re anything like me, you look at the dessert menu first. The rule is, and always will be, if there is something delicious on the dessert menu, you simply must have it; to me it is nonnegotiable.
Because everyone needs a little guidance, especially in where to find the best of something; bars, clubs, golf courses, we have guides to them all and more. We decided that the people of Cape Town needed something sweet in their lives; something of the dairy variety. Creating the perfect milkshake is an art, and we have the scoop on where you can find the best ones, as well as all the flavours they offer and the prices.
38 GOURMET CREATIONS (AND COUNTING)
It’s time to get shaken, not stirred. With 38 signature milkshakes and a dedicated “naughty and nice” milkshake menu, you might have to visit a few times to find your absolute favourite. The bonus is that you can sample these dreamy creamy delights, day or night. During the day, you might want to order the “nice” chocolate infused Aero Attacks or Lindt-O-Licious. If you need a breather between shakes, you can always hide out in one of their very urban-chic lounges or the beautiful Protea Hotel Fire & Ice by Marriot outside deck, with its stunning city and mountain views. By night, you can get “naughty” with one of their “grown-up” milkshakes, like Patronage, which includes a cheeky shot of Patrón coffee liqueur or Tequila Mockingbird, which is known to get the party started. As Tequila does. Luckily the party continues downstairs when some of SA’s top DJs hit the decks every Friday and Saturday night and the Samoka Live Stand-Up Comedy adds a few laughs to the first weekend of every month.

MY SUGAR - Sea Point
To those that know of My Sugar, you won’t be surprised to see them on this list. If you’ve never had the pleasure then make sure you’re ready for an explosion of cravings because these milkshakes are out of this world. Their range includes Strawberry, Super Chocolate, Butterscotch Popcorn, Cookie Butter, Coffee and Caramelised Coconut. Not only do you get an amazing milkshake, you get treats on top too! Each milkshake is decorated with a representative of the flavour; Butterscotch Popcorn has butterscotch popcorn on top, Cookie Butter has a cookie on top etc (you get the picture by now). Do yourself, but not necessarily your waistline, a favour by getting to Sea Point and indulging those milkshake dreams at My Sugar.

Royale Eatery - Cape Town CBD
This inner city hang-out is hugely popular for those that thirst for delicious milkshakes. Their menu is incredibly extensive and if you don’t find one you like, quite frankly you’re a little picky. My personal favourite is the Fresh Strawberry, it will honestly change your life. Their menu includes Smarties, Lunch Bar, Honeycomb, Chocolate Brownie, Nuttikrust, Oreo, Jack Daniels and Peanut Butter, and they even have a Vegan Choc-Peppermint. If you’re feeling brave, then why not give their Lemon Cheesecake milkshake and try and pair it with one of their amazing burgers? Royale Eatery is a culinary experience that you simply must try, else you’ll miss out on some of the best milkshakes in Cape Town.

Banana Jam - Kenilworth
Now you might be surprised to see Banana Jam on this list, but that just means that you’ve never had the coconut milkshake. The Banana Jam menu does feature the classic flavours like Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla but they go further with their tropical Coconut milkshake, their delicious Popcorn and their aromatic Coffee milkshakes. Yes, Banana Jam is famous for their cocktail happy hour, but their milkshake menu is also on point so don’t miss out on these flavourful treats.

Hudson’s - The Burger Joint - Claremont, Green Point and Stellenbosch
A developing theme we are seeing is the correlation between burgers and milkshakes on Cape Town menus, which we are really okay with, just by the way. Hudson’s is a favourite of Capetonians and their milkshake menu means that we don’t doubt why their popularity has grown and grown. The Hudson’s milkshake menu features Salted Caramel, Peanut Butter, Vanilla, Bar One, Strawberry, Oreo Shake and Lindt Brownie. Unlike some of the other branches, the Hudson’s in Claremont, Green Point and Stellenbosch have a scrumptious addition to the menu; the Cookie Monster. The Cookie Monster is a Bar One milkshake with a cookie crumb rim topped with whipped cream and chocolate chip cookies. Make sure you check the menu online before you go, to make sure that the branch you want to visit has the Cookie Monster!

Franky’s Diner - Sea Point
If there is a restaurant on this list that deserves the award of the most extensive milkshake menu, then Franky’s Diner is a worthy winner. They have over thirty milkshakes on the menu, and we are genuinely dying to try all of them. They have Roasted Hazelnut, Creme Brulee, Gingerbread Man, Peanut Butter and Jam, Candy Apple, Bubblegum Fun, Spicy Pumpkin and Turkish Delight (to name a few). If none of those tickle your fancy, then their Naughty Shakes Menu should get your tastebuds going. These shakes include a little tipple and their flavours include bubblegum, caramel, blackberry, hazelnut, Bar-One and more. I don’t know about you, but I am already making plans for a visit to Franky’s Diner.

Protea Fire and Ice Hotel - Cape Town CBD
The Protea Fire and Ice Hotel is another must-visit on our milkshake tour through Cape Town. This hotel is a popular spot for a milkshake break, and the menu leaves very little mystery as to why! Once again, their milkshake menu is, in a word, extensive. They have milkshakes in the following flavours; Aero, strawberries and cream, Ferrero Rocher, Oreo, Turkish delight, brownie pieces, Crunchie, Tempo, Peppermint Crisp and lemon meringue. But don’t despair, that’s not all, their menu has 37 milkshakes, 10 of which include a little tipple for those that like a little sugar with their alcohol.

Cafeen - Claremont/Kenilworth
This relaxed little cafe is the perfect hidden gem, with their milkshake menu rivalling that of the big inner city bars. As is normal, they have the classic ones; Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla and Coffee but they also have interesting ones too. Available in two sizes, they also have Roasted Hazelnut, Gingerbread, Creme Brulee, Kit Kat, Marshmallow, Rooibos, Chocolate Brownie Cheesecake, Bar One, Turkish Delight and Nutella. Stop by this quaint cafe for the some of the best milkshakes in the Southern Suburbs.

Gibson's Gourmet Burgers and Ribs - V & A Waterfront
Again with the burger-milkshake pairing, but we are on board so no complaints from us! Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers and Ribs was a new one for us, with most of us never having heard of it but my goodness we are glad we have now! They have some delicious flavour combinations like Salted Caramel, Toffee Apple & Fudge, Chocolate & Coconut, Oreo and Mint, Cheesecake, Caramel Fudge, Rose Water & Marshmallow, Tutti Frutti, Malva & Custard, Sweet & Salted Popcorn, Orange Blossom & Pansies, Banana Cream Pie, Milky Bar White Chocolate, Peanut Butter Brownie and more (honestly, I could go on for ages). The also have Freek Shakes; bigger sizes, bigger flavours and more indulgence than ever!
