Durban curry at this upmarket halaal restaurant

Lamb curry, lamb rogan josh, tiger prawn curry, butter chicken are specialties

Last updated: Monday, 13 June 2022

New, upmarket and halaal, that’s Nouveau Coffee & Grill in Milnerton. Its hearty menu includes Durban-style curries, steaks, seafood and desserts. It’s a warm and cosy space and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

ADMIRE THE CHIC SPACE

Nouveau has a modern, fresh style, with splashes of sage at the bar that accentuate the exposed brick walls. There’s a variety of seating, from modern, high-chairs to comfortable couches, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere.

TASTE PROPER DURBAN CURRY

Durban-style curries are Nouveau’s speciality – they’re the real deal. Chef Mohamed Ifthikaar Shaik grew up in Durban and attended culinary school there. He offers four particularly noteworthy curries: A traditional lamb curry made with A-grade lamb, slow-cooked in Indian spices; Lamb Rogan Josh, a staple of Kashmiri cuisine made with intense spices; tiger prawn curry and butter chicken. All are served with sambals and roti, naan, or Basmati rice.

ORDER FROM THE GRILL + STAY FOR DESSERT

Not in the mood for curry? There’s plenty else on the menu. Start off with a smoked salmon salad or peri-peri chicken livers entrée and, for mains, order from the grill section. It offers premium cuts, from fillet steak and sirloin to rump, and Tomahawk. For dessert, get a chocolatey brownie, cheesecake, granadilla panna cotta or crème brûlée.

The Tomahawk steak ranges between 430g and 450g. Image: Centric Media
