No drama, just shawarmas (and falafels) at Nish Nush
Previously a little hole-in-the-wall, Nish Nush has now opened an intimate café just down the road. Hidden on the corner of Bree Street, it’s a huge hit with its delicious falafels and shawarmas (no thanks to the self-described “inimitable falafel king”, owner Ofer Hollinger).

Nish Nush brings the taste of the Middle East to Bree Street, with its explosive and authentic Middle Eastern street food flavours. Another plus, everything is made from scratch, from the freshly baked pita bread to the hummus, falafels and zhoug sauce (a Yemeni-inspired sauce made with coriander and chilli).
It’s the falafels and hummus are what put Nish Nush on the map; the goodness of the medium-sized, crunchy, oval-shaped balls packed with flavour and topped with a creamy and tangy sauce.
“You won’t find any tinned chickpeas here!” adds Hollinger

The restaurant creates a well-rounded Middle Eastern food experience for its customers, from the Middle Eastern playlist to its informal, casual atmosphere. You can grab a stool, sit and watch the world go by as you enjoy your meal.
“We think the best places to eat street food around the world are places that can be described in this way; kinda hidden, but once you find them you keep coming back,” said Hollinger.

Just two doors down from its original location, you can now find Nish Nush. The space is small and intimate, with exposed stone walls and pops of colour from the yellow stools. Prices range from R50 - R150. You can also get your fix of falafels and shawarmas from Nish Nush’s stall at the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill every Saturday from 9am to 3pm.
