Things to do this Mother’s Day

Unconventional ideas like an escape room and beer fest

Last updated: Monday, 5 May 2025

Mother’s Day doesn’t have to look the same every year - not when you could be solving an escape room side by side, crafting ceramics from scratch or pairing wine with candy floss. Our lineup has something for every kind of mom, whether she’s into baking, beer, walks on the beach, or creating her own lipstick. Here are things to do with the mom(s) in your life.

ESCAPE GAME AT THE V&A WATERFRONT

Trade a spa day for a spy mission at HintHunt’s escape rooms. Each game takes two to six players and is fun for the entire family. There are themes inspired by Mission Impossible, Avengers, and more, and moms will get a small treat at the end. Find out everything you need to know about HintHunt’s escape rooms

Date: Saturday, 10 May, 10am to 8.30pm & Sunday, 11 May, 10am to 5.30pm
Cost: From R335 per person, book via HintHunt’s website

3-COURSE LUNCH BY THE SEASIDE

Hermanus’s favourite family restaurant, Dutchies, will have a special 3-course menu on Mother’s Day. There’s two options for each course. Like prawn, watermelon, mint, and feta skewers for starters; pan-grilled sole for mains; and for dessert; ginger malva pudding and rooibos anglaise.

Date: Sunday 11 April from 12pm
Cost: Starters from R185pp; mains from R265pp. Book on 028 314 1392 or info@dutchies.co.za

CUPCAKE CLASS FOR TWO

At this cupcake-decorating workshop, you and mom can whisk, bake and decorate from scratch - no shortcuts. Hosted by Créme & Croissant, you’ll learn pro-piping techniques and of course, you get to take home your creations (or just eat them on the spot). One ticket covers two people, so bring your best baking buddy.

Date: Sunday, 11 May; 11am to 1pm
Cost: From R400, book via Quicket

Surrounded by views of Table Mountain at The Coffee Fountain, you can craft floral-inspired ceramics from scratch while snacking on coffee and fresh pastries. It’s a 2-hour workshop and all clay materials and tools are provided. You also get to fire and glaze your finished piece, which will be ready for collection four to six weeks after.

Date: Sunday, 11 May; 2pm to 4pm
Cost: R380, book via Quicket

MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEA

Your mother deserves to be spoiled, and if you’ve got the funds to do so, Shimansky’s V&A boutique has some of the best quality jewellery. The esteemed jeweller recommends pieces like the dancing tanzanite pendant (tanzanite is 1 000 times rarer than diamonds), the diamond tennis bracelet, and halo earrings. See more in the Shimansky Mother’s Day gift guide.

Date: Daily, 9am to 8pm
Cost: From R7 995

MAKE YOUR OWN LIPSTICK

Instead of buying mom lipstick, why not let her make one instead? Lipped offers a lipstick experience where you and your gals can learn how to create your own perfect shade. All equipment and materials are provided, including a lip gloss kit for the kids. Or they can bring the party to you if you prefer a glam night in.

Date: For workshop times, email lippedsa@gmail.com
Cost: R380 for adults, R85 for kids, book via Lipped.shop

WALKING TOUR (MUIZENBERG TO KALK BAY)

For moms who love a good story (and a long walk on the beach), The Board Walk, offered by Cape Town Heritage Tours, happens on the most scenic stretch of the city’s coast. This 4km guided walk covers everything from colonial battles and surfer lore to Filipino sailors and Rhodes’ last breath.

Date: Sunday, 11 May; 2pm to 4.30pm
Cost: R120, book via Quicket

You and your mom can create a lasting memory (literally) at 2handsy by making your own hand castings. There’s music, drinks and food, including a R50 voucher, and while you wait for your casting to set, the host will take you through some fun games.

Cost: From R395, book via Quicket

“WEIRD AND WACKY” BEER FEST

The “weird and wacky” beer fest at Banana Jam Café will have brews from six local breweries like Afro Caribbean Brewing, Woodstock Brewery and Mother City Beer Project. Expect wacky brews such as Orange Goblin, Coffee Milk Stout and Sour Pooch Kids. There’ll also be snacks, games, and prizes for the weirdest dressed.

Date: Saturday, 10 May; 11am
Cost: From R275 for four beers and a limited edition glass, pre-order at ACBC.co.za

SENSORY WINE TASTING

At Asara WIne Estate, the Sensory Tree Experience transforms wine tasting into a multi-sensory adventure that goes beyond cheese and crackers. Each wine (four in total) is paired with a playful flavour - think Sauvignon Blanc with citrus candy floss and Pinotage Rosé with raspberry sorbet.

Date: Saturday, 10 May & Sunday, 11 May; 11am to 6pm
Cost: R250, book via Quicket
