Unconventional ideas like an escape room and beer fest
Last updated: Monday, 5 May 2025
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to look the same every year - not when you could be solving an escape room side by side, crafting ceramics from scratch or pairing wine with candy floss. Our lineup has something for every kind of mom, whether she’s into baking, beer, walks on the beach, or creating her own lipstick. Here are things to do with the mom(s) in your life.
Trade a spa day for a spy mission at HintHunt’s escape rooms. Each game takes two to six players and is fun for the entire family. There are themes inspired by Mission Impossible, Avengers, and more, and moms will get a small treat at the end. Find out everything you need to know about HintHunt’s escape rooms.
Date: Saturday, 10 May, 10am to 8.30pm & Sunday, 11 May, 10am to 5.30pm
Cost: From R335 per person, book via HintHunt’s website

Hermanus’s favourite family restaurant, Dutchies, will have a special 3-course menu on Mother’s Day. There’s two options for each course. Like prawn, watermelon, mint, and feta skewers for starters; pan-grilled sole for mains; and for dessert; ginger malva pudding and rooibos anglaise.
Date: Sunday 11 April from 12pm
Cost: Starters from R185pp; mains from R265pp. Book on 028 314 1392 or info@dutchies.co.za

At this cupcake-decorating workshop, you and mom can whisk, bake and decorate from scratch - no shortcuts. Hosted by Créme & Croissant, you’ll learn pro-piping techniques and of course, you get to take home your creations (or just eat them on the spot). One ticket covers two people, so bring your best baking buddy.
Date: Sunday, 11 May; 11am to 1pm
Cost: From R400, book via Quicket

Your mother deserves to be spoiled, and if you’ve got the funds to do so, Shimansky’s V&A boutique has some of the best quality jewellery. The esteemed jeweller recommends pieces like the dancing tanzanite pendant (tanzanite is 1 000 times rarer than diamonds), the diamond tennis bracelet, and halo earrings. See more in the Shimansky Mother’s Day gift guide.
Date: Daily, 9am to 8pm
Cost: From R7 995

Instead of buying mom lipstick, why not let her make one instead? Lipped offers a lipstick experience where you and your gals can learn how to create your own perfect shade. All equipment and materials are provided, including a lip gloss kit for the kids. Or they can bring the party to you if you prefer a glam night in.
Date: For workshop times, email lippedsa@gmail.com
Cost: R380 for adults, R85 for kids, book via Lipped.shop

For moms who love a good story (and a long walk on the beach), The Board Walk, offered by Cape Town Heritage Tours, happens on the most scenic stretch of the city’s coast. This 4km guided walk covers everything from colonial battles and surfer lore to Filipino sailors and Rhodes’ last breath.

Cost: From R395, book via Quicket
