Longtable feasts and Sunday roast in a historic wheat mill
Last updated: Tuesday, 13 June 2023
Despite its unique industrial exterior, this eatery is sophisticated with an old-school feel to match its menu: Traditional South African kos with a modern twist. It’s not your Ma se kos at Droom at Die Meul.

Some of the original mill features are still visible at Droom, which is part of what makes its aesthetic so curious. It’s a blend of industrial steel with rustic old-world touches. The space is decorated with tons of candelabras, cosy lamps with quirky shades, pumpkins and butternuts, and moody landscapes.
It’s situated in Philadelphia – about 30 minutes from the city centre – and is surrounded by cheery canola and wheat fields.
In every corner, there are details that will catch your eye. Image: Droom at Die Meul
Droom at Die Meul is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, which makes it a one-of-a-kind experience.
On Sundays, a roast lunch is served. This includes a slow-cooked leg of lamb with ten sides. Expect small plates like hand-kneaded mosbolletjies served with biltong dust, garden pesto and parmesan cream, pampoenkoekies with salted caramel sauce, buttered green beans and more.
Most of the alcohol served at Droom is sourced locally. The Donkey Gin and Philli Lager are both made in Philadelphia, as well as the Capaia and Mīrium wines.
The pampoenkoekies is one of the most popular items. Image: Droom at Die Meul
On Saturdays, guests can enjoy a longtable buffet-style feast, usually organised around a theme. The theme changes weekly. From French to English, Italian, and South African dining, it's a good idea to check the theme of the week before you visit. You can find out more on Droom's Instagram page.
