As I enter the Capital Mirage Hotel, a little gold and white corner draws me in. Perhaps it was the colours; perhaps it was the polished, modern marble and gold interior; or perhaps it was the smiling faces that seem to have some sort of magnetic power. Whatever it was, it had me at hello.
This was my first impression of Lume Beauty Atelier, a new spa and beauty salon in Cape Town that opened its doors at the end of October 2016.
This luxurious spot is the brainchild of Jenny Kouwenhoven, who was inspired to venture into the beauty industry after her extensive travel experiences with air carrier, Air France. The business class cabins featured products from Biologique Recherche, which Jenny fell in love with and, thus, decided to share her love for lush, international products with Cape Town.
Lume is home to exclusive local and international premium products used only at the most prestigious spas in the world. These include Academie Scientifique de Beaute, Biologique Recherche Officiel, Terre de Afrique, and Oribe hair care.
With this in mind, I am super excited for my (much-needed) treatment. My masseuse, Nicole, leads me to a dimly lit room that immediately calms me down. The experience starts with a gentle foot scrub that sees Nicole tenderly rubbing my feet with a gravel-like substance with a liquorice scent exclusive to the venue, called Lume Bespoke. Next, I tuck myself into a body-adjusting bed, it was slightly heated, warm as the autumn light.
Before the massage begins, the sweet masseur checks if I am comfortable with the light, the delicate soundscape and she inquired about my preference in terms of light, medium and heavy pressure application. I opted for medium to heavy, and that’s when the fun began.
After 60 minutes of uninterrupted bliss, I felt like the world could come at me and I would not be perturbed in the least.
In addition to massages, Lume Beauty Atelier also offers hair care, skin rejuvenating, body sculpting and grooming treatments. “Once a body treatment is booked, a one-on-one consultation with a specialist is included, probing your personal aesthetic goals, your budget, and your feelings on that particular day that might have led you to opt for a specific treatment. These are all discussed beforehand to get a better understanding of the client and their needs,” says PR Manager Tarn de Villiers. This process ensures that you get the most out of your treatment and that you are in fact booked for something that will work towards your beauty or relaxation goals.
Needless to say, I achieved one of my relaxation goals.
Note: Lume Beauty Atelier welcomes walk-ins for hair and nail treatments, but advises to book body treatment appointments at least a week in advance in order to guarantee an available slot and a consultation prior to your treatment.
Tip: Book Lume Events for bridal showers, birthdays, or group pamper sessions. Lume Beauty Atelier will also organize champers and platters at an extra cost. Walk-ins are welcome for hair and make-up, but it is advised to book at least a week in advance for a treatment to avoid disappointment.
The Bill: Hair treatments start at R200 and go up to R2750 for extensions | Skin rejuvenation treatments start at R320 to R6500 | Biologique Recherche body sculpting treatments start at R350 to R2300 | Lume Massages start at R460 to a duo massage at R1500 | Sublime grooming begins at R30 to R650
