Schalk Bezuidenhout is The First Stand-Up Comedian at Spier’s Comedy in the Vines

Standout stand-up comedy accompanied by good food and wine is a fine way to spend summer

Spier in Stellenbosch has exciting summer plans: every month from November 2017 until February 2018, they will have a local comedian take to their outdoor stage.

First on the line-up is Schalk Bezuidenhout, one of the sharpest tongues in comedy right now. He will be appearing at Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on Saturday, 25 November 2017. Bezuidenhout is best known for his appearances at the Cape Town Comedy Club at the Waterfront. You’ll recognise Schalk by his signature colourful grandpa jerseys, his tuft of curls and moustache. Unlike his fashion sense, Schalk’s comedy is on point. He was nominated for the Comics Choice awards 2013 in the Savanna Newcomer Category, and won the Cape Town Graca Comedy Showdown in 2012.

Bezuidenhout, who comes from Johannesburg, though is now based in Cape Town, likes to reflects on his journey as an Afrikaans boytjie from Kempton Park in Gauteng as he pokes fun at his traditional Afrikaans upbringing.

Next on Spier’s Comedy in the Vines line-up is Barry Hilton in December, Stuart Taylor in January and Marc Lottering in February. Each evening of summer comedy will be accompanied with food and wine. Spier will have a gourmet picnic basket on sale. It will include a bottle of Spier Signature, a wine that is the pride of the estate. Why not book your basket. If you don’t like eating al-fresco Eight Restaurant, the Farm Kitchen and Hoghouse BBQ and Bakery, will be open before the show.

TICKETS TO THE 2017 COMEDY IN THE VINES AT SPIER

Comedy in the Vines with Schalk Bezuidenhout starts at 6:30pm. Spier recommends that you arrive at 5pm and have a drink on the lawn before the show starts. It lasts an hour with no interval. You can book your tickets at Webtickets.co.za and tickets cost R170 per adult. The picnic basket, which includes a bottle of Spier Signature, serves two and costs R560, but does not include tickets. The total cost for two tickets and a picnic basket is R900.
