The first Super Rugby match of 2018 kicks off at DHL Newlands with the Stormers taking on the Jaguares on Saturday, 17 February. The Stormers is the official rugby team from Cape Town so let’s get the Mother City behind our boys come game day.
The Stormers was first formed in 1996 in Cape Town. And even with their lack of Super Rugby silverware, the Stormers still bring in of the highest average spectator attendance rates in the tournament. Many of the former players were also in the 2007 Springbok World Cup winning team, including Jean de Villiers ( a former Stormers captain), Bryan Habana and Schalk Burger. Currently, the team is captained by Siya Kolisi and is coached by former Springbok Robbie Fleck.
Both Kolisi and Fleck look forward to the season ahead with high hopes of the team bringing the 2018 trophy home to Cape Town. About the coming season, Fleck says: “We have designed and created something, both culturally and the way we play and train. We are busy building on that template and becoming more competitive.”
Kolisi echoes Fleck’s sentiments: “We are working very hard and we are very excited about this year. We are not just here to compete; we want to be one of the best teams in the competition.”
One of the most iconic rugby venues in the country, DHL Newlands Stadium can house 51 900 fans who are ready to support their favourite player. It is the 10th largest stadium in South Africa and boasts seating, standing and box seats. DHL Newlands is known to be packed to capacity when our boys in blue come out to show us what they are made of. Two rugby teams currently use DHL Newlands as their home base, the Stormers during the Super Rugby Tournament and Western Province during the Currie Cup Championship. The Currie Cup is a South African championship, which sees each province compete for the coveted Currie Cup Trophy.
The 2018 Stormers team is yet to be announced.
