The Road to Mecca, which opens this week at the Fugard Theatre, is a thought-provoking story of an artist’s desire for personal and artistic freedom within the confines of a conservative and very religious community in the Karoo in 1970s apartheid South Africa.
Written in 1984 by the great South African playwright Athol Fugard, The Road to Mecca is inspired by and based on the story of artist Helen Martins who lived in Nieu-Bethesda where she created the now-famous Owl House. The Owl House is a work of art, which Martins created between 1945 and 1976 as the antidote to the dullness of her daily life, by transforming her world with light, colour and texture.
Today the Owl House is a designated provincial heritage site where the spirit and legacy of Miss Helen lives on.
Eric Abraham presents this Fugard Theatre production of The Road to Mecca as a tribute to the iconic playwright Athol Fugard in his 85th year. Catch it now, playing at the Fugard Theatre on Caledon Street in District Six.
With theatre heavyweights Sandra Prinsloo and Marius Weyers in the roles of Miss Helen and the Reverend Marius Byleveld respectively, and joined by double Fleur du Cap. Award-winning actress Emily Child as Elsa Barlow, look forward to a production with gravitas that touches on various universal themes around expression and the human condition.
