Afrikaans Language Monument: The roots and growth of Afrikaans in SA
The Afrikaans Language Monument represents the roots, growth and position of the Afrikaans language in South Africa.
The Afrikaans Language Monument in Paarl represents the roots and growth of Afrikaans. The various columns and spheres symbolise the influence of other languages, from three different continents, on the development of Afrikaans.
It was designed by architect Jan van Wijk who was inspired by the environment with its granite rocks and by the works of two prominent Afrikaans authors.
The Afrikaans Taalmonument was unveiled in Paarl in 1975. The language monument also offers the best view of the Paarl valley, a walking trail and a restaurant.
