Of course you’ve watched The Amazing Race, where teams race from checkpoint to checkpoint as they compete in a series of mental and physical challenges. But did you know you can play the game yourself at the Waterfront? There's no danger in this one. Just total thrills, comical confusion as you puzzle your way through locations and landmarks, and, yes, a race to the finish.
All of HintHunt’s amazing race experiences are based on the thrill and excitement of the popular TV series. Image: HintHunt Africa
The game starts at the HintHunt homebase in the Watershed, where teams get different colour bibs and choose a leader to man the phone (so make sure it’s charged) as they navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes because there will be some sprints, just as on the TV series (especially if you are competitive).
And you’ll need to make some strategic moves. Each checkpoint requires your team to search for clues and solve puzzles to speedily complete the challenge that moves you to the next location. There are puzzles involving roman numerals at Pump House Bar and penguins at the Two Oceans Aquarium.
Races take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes to complete, depending on your team’s speed, which actually whizz by quite quickly.
Each team will need to have at least one smartphone. Image: HintHunt Africa
Street Arts, Wheely-Wheely Good, and Far & Wide are the three routes you can choose from.
In Street Arts, teams have to search for clues (like a graffiti mural) around the Watershed. You get to explore the scenic route but don’t be distracted by what’s there: Keep your eyes firmly on the prize.
You'll have to avoid bumping into locals as you dash in and out of buildings, and linger at certain points to study nearby monuments and statues that hold the answer to your challenge.
Try to stay both alert and fast, as it’s easy to miss some of the clues, like the maps and signage in Alfred Square.
For Wheely-Wheely Good, teams have to solve a morse code puzzle before racing through the Waterfront and visiting some of it's iconic landmarks along the way. You’ll need to make strategic decisions to stay ahead of the opposition.
You’ll play at TimeOut Market, Cape Wheel, Harbour House, and more iconic locations. Image: HintHunt Africa
Far & Wide is the longest one. Teams start off the race with a pigpen puzzle (letters and symbols in a grid). The first team to decrypt it gains a head start.
Just like in the TV series, there’s even a T-Junction question where teams have to choose which challenge to take on. Here, you’ll spend time in the Silo District, learning about South Africa’s history.
HintHunt’s Amazing Race experience is not weather-dependent. Image: HintHunt Africa
The Amazing Race is an exciting, fast-paced, and interactive game that requires teamwork (it can accommodate between four to 100 players).
You’ll see families running towards their next checkpoint while friends deliberate over which route to take. Imagine the bragging rights you’ll earn amongst your friends at a birthday party or bachelors, or egging your colleagues on in a team building.
They can also modify routes, and shorten or extend the duration of the game. It comes at an additional cost.
From small teams to large groups HintHunt’s games foster camaraderie and a shared sense of achievement. Image: HintHunt Africa
