See antiques for free at Toeka Stoor in Paarl

Vintage goods, old household brands, veteran motors, coffee in tin cups + more

Last updated: Wednesday, 11 May 2022

Toeka Stoor & Coffee Shop is on Domaine Brahms Wineries and, if you love vintage, it’s a must-visit. The coffee shop serves farm-style food and old-school coffee and there’s two huge sheds that house fascinating collections of old wares – plus there’s a kiddies play area and farm animals roam the grounds. The cherry on top? It’s free to enter this informal museum-like space.

STEP BACK IN TIME

You can spend hours in this quirky Boland spot browsing collections of veteran motors, tractors, farm equipment, vintage furniture, and favourite South African household brands, such as Five Roses, Coke, Omo and Sunlight. All this nostalgic paraphernalia is prettily displayed in the two large storage units on this farm in Paarl.

You can see everything from old petrol pumps and road signs to clothing and sewing machines from the 1900s, what beauty products looked like decades ago, and loads of other fascinating items. And did you know that Toeka Stoor featured in the popular Afrikaans TV show, Kwêla?

STAY FOR THE FARM-STYLE FOOD

Support Toeka Stoor and order breakfast or lunch from the simple, yet unique menu. The coffee shop offers a breakfast buffet that includes eggs, boerewors, bacon, curry baked beans, peri-peri chicken livers and freshly baked bread, straight from the farm kitchen.

Take a seat amongst antiques and try popular South African foods, from bobotie pie to vetkoek. Image: Simone Strydom

Not in the mood for a brekkie? Opt for South African favourites, like a bobotie or chicken pie, “ouma se kerrie vetkoek”, jaffels, or a classic toasted sandwich, with chips and a soda float. There are also spring rolls, a quiche of the day, as well as a John Deere Burger with a juicy beef patty, cheese and bacon. And don’t forget the “moerkoffie”, which is served in tin cups, just like grandma and grandpa used to drink it.

BRING THE KIDS

This family-friendly space is the perfect spot for a lazy Sunday outing. There’s a bright and colourful outdoor play area for kids and lush, green lawns with farm animals roaming about. Stop by the tuck shop and taste popular sweets your parents used to enjoy when they were young. Plus, there’s gift shop where you can buy t-shirts, old magazines, toys and other souvenirs.
