2020 Super Rugby: Fixtures And A Breakdown Of How It Works

The new Super Rugby fixtures are out, and in 2020 it’s kicking off earlier than usual with the first game week taking place on Friday 31 January. It’s promising another 21 weeks of exhilarating rugby action. Capetonians should prepare their Stormers jerseys as our boys take on the Hurricanes at DHL Newlands Stadium on Saturday 1 February in their first Super Rugby fixture.
THE FORMAT
League
The competiton starts with 15 teams competing in a league system. The team roster is also divided into three regional groups of five teams: the South African, Australian and New Zealand conferences.
Each team plays 16 games, facing opponents from their own conference twice, while playing each team from the other conferences once. Teams get four points for a win, two for a draw and one bonus point if they score three more tries than their opponent, or lose by seven points or less. Positions on the league table. Positions at the end of the league fixtures determine which teams go through to the knockout phase.
Knockout Phase
The standings on both the conference and overall logs determine which teams progress to the knockout phase. The conference group winners go straight through to the quarter-finals, while the standings in the 15 team log determine the other five quarter-finalists.
The league section of the competition is set up so that the three conference toppers naturally sit at the top of the overall log as well. From there, the fourth placed team in the overall standings becomes the best wildcard quarter finalist, while positions five to eight make up the remaining quarter final spots .

Tickets are available online at various ticketing sites, or if you’re attending Super Rugby matches in Cape Town, tickets are also available at the DHL Newlands Stadium from the Tuesday before match day. For all the other teams’ match tickets, please visit the respective teams’ websites. Prices are still to be confirmed.
THE SUPER RUGBY CONFERENCES AND THEIR TEAM
South African Conference:

Stormers: Cape Town’s boys in blue, coached by Robbie Fleck and captained by Siya Kolisi. Let’s show our support for the team this year. The Stormers’ home ground is DHL Newlands.

Bulls: This Pretoria-based team has a new coach in Pote Human and a new captain in Lood De Jager. The Bulls won the Super Rugby title in 2007, 2009 and 2010. The Bulls’ home ground is at Loftus Versfeld.

Lions: Joburg’s Super Rugby contenderis coached by Swys de Bruin and captained by Warren Whiteley. The Lions call Emirates Airline Park home.

Sharks: This Durban side is coached by Robert du Preez with Louis Schreuder coming in as the captain. Their home ground is Jonsson Kings Park.

Jaguares: This Argentinian team is part of the South African conference and their new head coach is Gonzalo Quesada while their captain is Jeronimo De La Fuente. The team first joined Super Rugby in 2016.
New Zealand Conference:

Crusaders: Based at the AMI Stadium in Christchurch, the Crusaders have won the Super Rugby a whopping eight times: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2017. They are headed by coach Scott Robertson and captain Sam Whitelock.

Chiefs: The Chiefs are based in Hamilton at FMG Stadium Waikato and won the Super Rugby in 2012 and 2013. Their head coach is Colin Cooper while they have two captains, Sam Cane and Aaron Cruden.

Blues: The Blues call Eden Park in Auckland home. They took the Super Rugby trophy in 1996, 1997 and 2003. Their coach is Leon McDonald and their captains are Blake Gibson and Patrick Tuipulotu.

Highlanders: Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin is the home of the Highlanders. In 2015, they came out tops to win the Super Rugby. Their head coach is Aaron Mauger and the captains are Ben Smith and Luke Whitelock.

Hurricanes: The Hurricanes call Westpac Stadium in Wellington home. They won the Super Rugby in 2016 for first time. The team is headed up by coach John Plumtree while Dane Coles is the captain.
Australian Conference:

Brumbies: The Brumbies’ home ground is GIO Stadium in Canberra and they won the Super Rugby in 2001 and 2004. Their coach is Dan McKellar while their captai is Christian Lealiifano.

Melbourne Rebels: As noted in their name, the Melbourne Rebels are based at AAMI Park in Melbourne. Dave Wessels is the head coach while Dane Haylett-Petty is the captain.

Reds: The Reds call Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane home. They won the Super Rugby title in 2011. Brad Thorn is the head coach while Samu Kerevi is the captain.

Waratahs: Allianz Stadium in Sydney is the home of the Waratahs. They won the Super Rugby title in 2014. Their coach is Rob Penney and the captain is Michael Hooper.

Sunwolves: This Japanese team is based at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo. They joined Super Rugby in 2016. Their head coach is Tony Brown and the team has two captains, Craig Millar and Willie Britz.
