Ever wondered how on earth someone could manage to get such an up-close shot of a cheetah and her cubs, or capture dolphins gliding and twirling underwater together like synchronised swimmers? The Wild Shot Photography Conference is where you are going to get the answers to these questions – straight from the photographers themselves, while also seeing some of their most awe-inspiring work. Twelve renowned nature photographers and photojournalists from South Africa, Botswana, the UK, and the USA will be sharing the tales of adventure behind their photos, offering pro camera tips, and also making themselves available for a casual chat with you! Go ahead and join them on Saturday, 23 September 2017, from 8:30am to 5pm, at the Nedbank/BoE Auditorium in the Clock Tower precinct at the V&A Waterfront.
This event is by no means limited to the snap-happy; everybody who enjoys photography or a appreciates a beautiful and skillfully captured photograph is welcome to attend. It’s all about inspiration, cool stories and a fun time (oh, and there’s wine at the end!). You may already be familiar with the work of the photographers speaking at end. If not, you’ll likely be not only familiar, but a big fan, by the end of the day!
LINE-UP OF PHOTOGRAPHERS SPEAKING AT THE 2017 WILD SHOTS PHOTOGRAPHY CONFERENCE
Brian Skerry will be the keynote speaker of the day. The American underwater photographer is renowned for his fantastic portfolio of up-close shots of sharks taken while swimming with the beasts. He has photographed more cover images for National Geographic Magazine than anyone else. He will be speaking on his book, Ocean Soul, which is filled with some of his best underwater shots and the stories behind these moving photographs.
Brandon de Kock, photographer, cookbook author, and Getaway Magazine writer, will be the hosting speaker for the day. He and the other photographers will also be doing book signings on the day.
Wild Shots is all about inclusivity and sharing a love for photography and the natural world. It demonstrates this with its outreach programme that gets underprivileged children from government schools involved in wildlife photography by teaching them more about it, including taking them on trips to the Kruger National Park to try their hand at wildlife photography and to put into practice what they learned on the programme. A few of the children will be attending the conference and one dependant, now a photojournalist, will be speaking briefly and sharing his work too.
Included in the price of the conference ticket is coffee and tea, which will be served at various breaks during the day, as well as lunch at midday. A wine reception with delicious vino from Bouchard Finlayson will end off the day. The cost of the ticket covers the wine too.

South Africa is absolutely spoilt when it comes to the wildlife it is home to and there are tonnes of game reserves not far from Cape Town where you can find wild animals in their natural habitats. To start with, why not go on a wildlife day tour in Cape Town’s surrounds. And if you want to spend a little more time in the bush, we highly recommend going on some of these Cape Town safari adventures and game drives.
If you’re keen to learn the tricks of the photography trade, there are several places that offer photography courses in the Mother City – see where you can go in our overview of cool art classes and creative courses in Cape Town.
