Jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim – who turns 83 on Monday, 9 October – is coming home to Cape Town to perform for two nights only at The Artscape on Friday, 13 and Saturday, 14 October 2017. Ibrahim will be taking you on a journey of his musical career, with compositions spanning 70 years.
Jazz aficionados, who know that this is a rare and special musical experience, will already have their seats booked for these concerts. Ibrahim is perhaps one of the most famous people to ever be born to our great city, and his concerts are not common occurrences.
Ibrahim, a local legend, national treasure and world acclaimed jazz pianist was born in 1934 in Cape Town and attended school in District Six. The acclaimed pianist and composer is renowned as one of the founders of the sub-genre Cape Jazz.
Ibrahim got his taste for music from his mother, who played piano at their community church. He started his professional jazz career when he joined the Jazz Epistles, a collective created in Sophiatown, Johannesburg, and including some of the greatest names in South African jazz; such as Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangwa.
The apartheid government became increasingly suspicious of jazz groups and so the Jazz Epistles eventually broke up. He declared his support for the ANC in 1976, and continued his musical career elsewhere. Ibrahim now divides his time between Cape Town and abroad, but rarely performs at home.
If you’re not familiar with Ibrahim’s work, here are six of his works, plus an interview:
