A one-of-a-kind public brasserie and private members club truly offering guests a unique Cape Town experience
Just six days after opening its doors in July 2015, The Stack – owned by designer Sarah Ord and her husband hotelier Nigel Pace – situated in historic Leinster Hall in Gardens offering patrons a stylish brasserie as well as a members-only area upstairs, was tragically destroyed by a fire that swept through the top floor of the property. Since then and after months of hard work, the illustrious 160-year old Victorian building has been rebuilt and restored to its former glory (as well as has received a few extra improvements and adjustments) and is now officially ready to start serving the public once again.
Re-launched in June 2016, The (reimagined and repurposed) Stack truly offers customers a one-of-kind experience comprising a luxurious public brasserie and bar downstairs offering delicious, simple French fare as well as a unique private members-only club located upstairs complete with a lounge, verandah, bar and three meeting rooms.
The Brasserie and Bar
Offering diners authentic and hearty French fare, The Stack’s brasserie guarantees simple, great-tasting dishes, not to mention an extensive wine list. The unassuming venue is comfortable and friendly and even serves a plats du jour option [a specific dish prepared on a particular day] that will change daily – think coq au vin, pork schnitzel and moules Marinieres to name but a few weekly options. Other lunch and dinner items include pork confit (confit Kolbroek pork belly served with caramelised apple purée, fynbos honey-glazed carrots and cider jus), Croque-Madame sandwich (grilled Gruyère and smoked black forest ham sandwich served with sunny side up egg on brioche) and beef bourguignon (braised shin of African Angus beef served with smoked bacon, mushroom and lentil cassoulet). The stylish Gardens eatery also has a bar area situated next door where guests are welcome to eat at the spacious counter or enjoy a few craft beers while waiting for a seat at the Brasserie.
Private Members Club
Located upstairs, club members have access to the private bar area, lounge and outdoor verandah. Members also have access to the Screening Room – 16-seater equipped with a smart television, the 12-seater Huddle Room and eight-seater Cuddle Room (bookings must be pre-arranged). Free, hi-speed Wi-fi, on-site parking, access to the club’s concierge service, chef access for on-site and off-site functions, invitations to The Stack’s exclusive events as well as VIP tickets to local events and complimentary pre-arranged luxury chauffeur transfer to and from the club (within 10-km), are a few other luxuries benefits club members are presented with.
Membership is on a referral basis only and Sarah and Nigel are very clear about the personalities that will work well in the space. Looking for people who have an appreciation of the finer things in life, the owners wish to create a welcoming space that allows for all members to feel comfortable and at ease with one another and their surroundings.
Sarah and Nigel have created a unique and interesting space and experience as well as something very unlike any other Cape Town venue. The Stack guests – whether as a citizen of the public appreciating an impeccable meal at the brasserie or as a private club member enjoying a drink upstairs at the bar – are truly presented with the opportunity to indulge in the luxuries of life…
