The multi award-winning production Clybourne Park is coming to The Fugard Theatre for a limited time only from Tuesday, 16 August until Saturday, 1 October 2016. A scathing satire with cutting intellect, the production delves into race relations pertaining to property through a refreshingly honest and insightful lens. Purchase your tickets from Computicket.com now!
Bruce Norris’s Clybourne Park was the winner of the Tony Award for Best Play in 2012, the Oliver Award for Best New Play in 2011 and the Pulitzer Drama Prize in 2011. The production’s long-awaited South African debut is orchestrated by Eric Abraham, and directed by Greg Karvellas, with set design by Saul Radomsky and costume design by Birrie Le Roux.
Set in 1959, the play opens with a white couple, Russ and Bev, selling their two-bedroom Chicago Bungalow in Clybourne Park to a black family – the first black family to move into the neighbourhood, which causes quite a ruckus with the insular white suburbanites. The play then accelerates forward to 2009, where we see the same property being purchased by Lindsey and Steve, a white couple, whose ambition to develop the land causes discontent among the now all black community.
When a script is as brilliant as this, it requires an exceptional cast to pull it off. Luckily, there’s no limit to acting talent in this country as is evident in the all-star list of names set to bring Clybourne Park to life. The list includes Andrew Buckland (Tobacco, and the Harmful Effects Thereof); Susan Danford (Broken Glass, Missing…); Lesoko Seabe (Siembamba); Scott Sparrow (Strangers On A Train); Nicholas Pauling (The Pervert Laura, A Steady Rain); and Pope Jerrod (Othello).
Described as “outrageously funny” by the Daily Telegraph, “superb, elegantly written and hilarious” by the New Yorker, and “deliciously offensive”, by the Guardian, Norris’s play is an irreverent, naughty, and extremely funny rebuttal to Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun.
According to Eric Abraham, Founding Producer and owner of The Fugard Theatre, “Clybourne Park is a milestone play that examines our sense of otherness and issues such as the language we use with each other, gentrification, heritage and community, in an unapologetically searing but bitingly witty manner. These are conversations that are pertinent to South Africans, and we are thrilled to be presenting the South African premiere of this Pulitzer, Tony and Olivier Award-winning play at The Fugard Theatre.”
There’s a saying that laughter is the best medicine, and South Africans are encouraged to watch this performance and to laugh long and hard whilst also seriously reflecting on what Norris is so eloquently trying to convey. Be sure to book tickets quickly as they’re likely to sell out fast.
