Eddie Izzard Comedy Show
British comic legend brings his side-splitting style of humour to Cape Town
Arguably one of the world’s finest stand-up comedians, Eddie Izzard is set to travel to the Mother City to perform at the GrandWest Grand Arena on Tuesday, 18 and - due to popular demand - Wednesday, 19 June 2013 as part of his larger world tour, Force Majeure (‘force of nature’ in French).
From an early age, Izzard was intrigued by the bright lights and fame the stage offered. The budding thespian made it his mission to play a part, regardless of how small, in school plays, but found his love for comedy in the classroom. However, it was only years later at university when he and fellow student and friend Rob Ballard took an act they’d put together to the streets of London that a career as a comedian became a reality.
In the 80s, the famous funnyman went solo and spent time as a street performer in Europe and the US before moving on to stand-up venues in Britain. In the mid-90s, Izzard met American actor Robin Williams on the set of “The Secret Agent”; the two became friends and Williams encouraged the newbie to bring his unique brand of humour to America.
Here, he enjoyed great success and secured two Primetime Emmy awards in 2000. Later, in 2007, the master laugh-maker was ranked as number 3 on Channel 4’s list of 100 Greatest British National Comedians, an achievement that firmly planted him at the forefront of comedy.
Not just a comic genius though, Izzard, whose greatest talent is, what he calls, talking “bollocks”, has also starred in a string of theatrical plays and films, including “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen”, and has lent his voice to characters in “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”, “Igor” and “Cars 2”.
Also well known for transvestism tendencies, the hilarious funnyman, who pulls off heels just as well, if not better, than some women, refutes claims that he is gay and rather refers to himself as “a straight transvestite or male lesbian”.
As a man that’s as passionate about politics as he is about cross-dressing, Izzard has at times threatened to drop off the comedy circuit to pursue a career in this field.
Fortunately though, he is putting such aspirations off for the time being and giving his all to his current aptly named Force Majeure world tour. After performing sold-out shows in 2011 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Izzard has now committed himself to travelling the globe, bringing his latest comic offering to 25 different cross-continental countries, including our very own South Africa.
