CBD’s biggest family-friendly market: Festive edition

Last updated: Monday, 18 November 2024

For November, Kuier@TheCastle, Cape Town CBD’s biggest family friendly market, is turning into the city’s biggest gift market with over 120 vendors. You can also make a gift, like a tuft rug or jewellery, or adopt a pet from Paws-A-While, the animal adoption non-profit. Here’s more reasons to visit this monthly market at the Castle of Good Hope.

1. SEE ALL KINDS OF CAPETONIANS THERE

It’s a warm and creative gathering of people from all walks of life. They bring along their families to enjoy shopping from artists and artisans and listen to the stories of the makers while their kids dance to the live music.

2. GIFT MARKET

Kuier’s festive season theme is “shop local, gift thoughtfully”, and there will be a variety of unique and handcrafted goods from local artisans and designers. There’s homeware, fashion, art, accessories and more.

Plus, the festive theme continues when the market returns on 14 and 15 December. Keep an eye out for updates and all you need to know.

3. 120+ VENDORS

There’s a smorgasbord of over 120 makers with interesting stories. The amazing luxury women’s wear designer, Thabo Makhetha, will be there.

So are ceramists and textile designers, like Whimsical Collection, who do dreamy prints. Kingsdale Eporio, with their tongue-in-cheek, conversation-starter statement socks, have a stall too.

4. NEW COLLAB WITH PAWS-A-WHILE

This month, because of Kuier’s collaboration with Paws-A-While, an animal welfare non-profit, you can gift a pet when you adopt an animal or shop for pet accessories.

5. ACCESS TO THE CASTLE FOR FREE

For the price of the entry to the market, you also get free access to the 385-year-old Castle of Good Hope. That gets you free access to the exhibitions. Like the Koena Art Institute, a gallery of the indigenous art, where you can see Khoisan art and film screenings.

6. EXPLORE THE STALLS & THE CASTLE

It opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. People tend to stay for a couple of hours, wander from stall to stall and into the nooks and crannies of the Castle. The market is in the square under stretch tents, and there’s a harvest table and comfy bean bags scattered everywhere.

7. WORKSHOPS FOR ALL AGES

Make yourself something special for the holidays, or create a gift for a friend at one of the 13 creative workshops stalls. There’s mosaic jewellery making, crocheting, beading, kids cookie decorating and more.

8. FREE ENTRY FOR KIDS UNDER 7

Entry is discounted for market Saturdays. Families will be happy to know kids under seven get in for free, and it's R15 for pensioners, students and children aged seven to 17. For everyone else, it’s just R30.

9. FOOD TRUCKS: GREEK, CAPE MALAY & MORE

There’s three anchor trucks and two new additions every month. People keep coming back for Ground Culture, loved for their burgers, Cape Malay House, and Local Brew.

10. SECURE & FREE PARKING

It’s easy access to the Castle via Darling Street, there’s a side pathway. There's also arrows and signage on the street poles to point people to where the parking is. Plus there’s plenty of security.
