Kuier@TheCastle’s February edition, which celebrates one year of Kuier, is all about the theme of love. There’s Valentine’s-themed workshops where you can make crochet hearts, cupcake love candles, heart cookies, and more. Or browse goods from over 200 vendors. Here’s our 10 reasons to go to the CBD’s biggest family artisanal market.
It’s a warm and creative gathering of people from all walks of life. They bring along their families to enjoy shopping from artists and artisans and listen to the stories of the makers while their kids get creative and enjoy a host of activities.
Get a taste of what the market is like:
February’s theme is fitting, as you can celebrate the love for Cape Town’s creative talent at Kuier. It’s a vibrant marketplace showcasing handcrafted homeware, fashion, art, and accessories by some of the city’s most talented artisans and designers.

There’s a smorgasbord of over 200 vendors with interesting stories, including jewellery and textile designers, like Whimsical Collection, who do dreamy prints. Kingsdale Emporio, with their tongue-in-cheek, conversation-starter statement socks, has a stall too.
Plus, you can join a drumming session and learn how to flamenco dance!
After browsing you can flop down on the giant bean bags. Image: Kuier@TheCastle
The Craft and Design Institute is hosting a free diffuser workshop. You’ll get to make your own wooden bead diffuser with an aromatherapy oil of your choice. A sweet little gift for yourself or someone special.
Both kids and adults love the workshops. Image: Kuier@TheCastle
You’ll also get access to all the museums and exhibitions at the 385-year-old Castle of Good Hope. Like the Koena Art Institute, a gallery of the indigenous art, where you can see Khoisan art, film screening and the phenomenal Fired Exhibition of ceramics.

The market opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. People tend to stay for a couple of hours, wandering from stall to stall and into the nooks and crannies of the Castle. The market is in the square under stretch tents, and there’s a harvest table and comfy bean bags scattered everywhere.
There's live music too. Image: Kuier@TheCastle
Besides the love-themed ones, there’s also workshops where you can try drumming, flamenco dance, make African pop art, handpaint tote bags, craft micro-mosaic jewellery and even paint your own shoes. And kids will love the bead workshop (for children four and up).
There’s creative workshops for all ages and a dedicated Kids Creative Corner. Image: Kuier@TheCastle
Bring the whole family: Kids under seven get in for free, and it's R15 for pensioners (and students). For everyone else, it’s just R30.

This month you can look forward to Ty’s Bagels, Cape Malay, the Flaming Spud, delicious burgers from Ground Culture, fresh juices from Speedo Juice, fabulous lemonade from Little Lemons and a selection of local gins.
There's lots of seating to grab after you've gotten your food. Image: Kuier@TheCastle
It’s easy access to the Castle’s onsite parking via Darling Street, there’s a side pathway from the parking directly to the main entrance. Arrows and signage on the street poles will guide you to the parking. Plus there’s plenty of security.
