The iconic bathroom man gets a magnificent makeover with this Kickstarter campaign
It’s one of the most iconic symbols in use today – it transcends global boundaries, revolutionised basic communication in the 1960s, and started with the redesigning of the corporate identity of British Railways. Today, we all know it and use it in daily life. Any guesses what it could be? The bathroom man, of course! And now, Persona Art Project is taking the simple toilet figure and turning into works of art depicting beloved characters and leaders, available for purchase as gorgeous, quirky gifts via Kickstarter.
The Persona Art Project Kickstarter campaign is all about taking a mass symbol and individualising it, by using it to show the essential details that characterise popular figures across different cultures. When we think of Nelson Mandela, we think about his salt-and-pepper hair and colourful shirts; when we picture Frida Kahlo, we envision a glorious eyebrow and exuberant arty dresses. By customising the bathroom figure with these famous features, the simple outline becomes instantly recognisable as someone familiar to us all. Traversing cult TV and music legends, international leaders and sports stars, the basic stick figure has become everyone from Captain Jack Sparrow and Walter White to Ron Burgundy and Amy Winehouse.
Part of the reason why we love this super-crafty campaign is because it depicts a number of our favourite home-grown heroes, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu in his red robe and glasses, Madiba in his jazzy African-inspired apparel, AB de Villiers in his cricket finery and Trevor Noah with his elf-ears and sharp red suit. The other reason is because it’s a passion project founded by two of our own South-African born bros – Ant and Shayne Vervoort, which makes us all the more eager to support their daring design escapade.
Every Christmas, we tend to trot out the same boring gifts for loved ones – this year, elevate soap on a rope to something markedly more hip and lasting. Buy your babe a bathroom man (or loo lady), depicting his/her favourite mini icon – when they have an adorable Ali G staring at them from the lavatory door, they’re bound to be eternally grateful and the simple act of going to the loo will become infinitely more exciting.
The Kickstarter campaign kicks off on Tuesday, 22 September, and, as with all Kickstarter campaigns it works on a rewards system. Simply decide which package you would like to fund on the campaign page, and you’ll get a special reward in return, ranging from postcards to an individually framed print. Not only that, but you’ll also have the privilege of being a part of the Persona family and vision to take something simple and make it beautifully different. Keep an eye out for our mini Molo – we’re hoping he’ll make an appearance soon – after all, he is a Cape Town icon!
