It’s tough out there for intellectually challenged young people. That’s why Only Specials, a café with a powerful mission, trains these youngsters to learn hospitality skills, teamwork, and customer service.

WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL

The young people are guided by experienced professionals who understand their needs and provide tailored training.

The training programme is two years and 80% of the students who’ve finished the programme now have jobs as bakers, baristas and shop assistants.

We interviewed these students. It's truly heartwarming to hear about their experiences at Only Specials in Hermanus.

CLASSIC COFFEE SHOP FOOD

The café’s quiet courtyard is a peaceful spot to grab lunch or late afternoon cake and tea (the tiramisu is one of their most-ordered dishes).

Another popular dish is the slow-cooked pulled beef sandwich with caramelised onions, cheese, and homemade BBQ sauce. There are also plenty of gluten-free, keto, and vegetarian options.

HOW TO FIND ONLY SPECIALS

Only Specials is an actual hidden gem. There isn’t signage from the street so you need to know where to look for it.

It’s in the same building as Daan’s Bakery (look out for the orange pillars and orange windmill sign) in the centre of Hermanus.

Here’s how you get to Only Specials from Cape Town:

• Take Walter Sisulu Ave to Nelson Mandela Blvd/N1/N2
• Follow N2 to R43. Take exit 92 from N2
• Follow R43 to Dirkie Uys St in Hermanus
