Straight out of Luthuli House, beloved SA socialite, political commentator and comedian Evita Bezuidenhout will be gracing the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel with her presence on Sunday, 3 September 2017. You are invited to join her for a humorous, intimate evening accompanied by canapés and Boschendal wine. You will be free to ask her about her views on the political situation in South Africa, international relations and more. Her answers are sure to have you splitting your sides with laughter!
The Afrikaans Ms Bezuidenhout, also known as Tannie Evita, is just one of the characters in drag manufactured by Pieter-Dirk Uys, a South African master of comedy and playwright extraordinaire. Pieter-Dirk has long been making audiences laugh with his satirical, liberal commentary on our country’s politics and the challenges we face as a nation. He did this during apartheid and continues to do so today, making his disapproval of unjust and corrupt systems known through his work.
Pieter-Dirk continues to perform as himself, as Tannie Evita and as various other personalities, offering witty criticisms on the serious problems our democracy faces, including government corruption, nepotism, social injustice, racism and more. Not only is his work hilarious – it is also a call to all South Africans to remain aware and critical of these realities and challenges. Needless to say, it will be a treat to get to know Tannie Evita’s thoughts and opinions – she herself is a caricature of a well-meaning but still flawed white, wealthy Afrikaans woman – as well as her ironic sense of humour. And there can be no better way to do this than in a relaxing five-star hotel as you sip on a glass of vino.
The Mount Nelson is a beautiful old building and something of a historical landmark in our pretty city. It is probably best known for its pink walls and famously decadent high teas! As if spending the evening in the company of Tannie Evita isn’t enough, it’s also a great reason to go and enjoy the splendour of the iconic Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel.
If you can’t make it to the event on this particular day, don’t worry. A New Exclusive Audience with Tannie Evita will also be happening at the hotel on 10, 17 and 24 September 2017 (each date is on a Sunday).
