Red Hot Chili Peppers Concert in Cape Town
The rock ‘n roll bad boys of the 90s are destined for South African soil in February 2013!
After musically making love to American audiences for nearly three decades, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are finally coming to the otherside (see song below): they’re destined to play live in concert in Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point on Tuesday, 5 February 2013.
After a dirty rumour tore through the twitterverse on Friday, 24 August - thanks to blog post by Mike Sharman, the owner of Retroviral Digital Communications – Big Concerts, the event organisers responsible for luring The Kings of Leon, Lady Gaga and Linkin Park to Mzansi, confirmed on their Facebook page on Monday, 27 August that the multi-platinum award-winning artists would play two shows in South Africa (the Johannesburg show is scheduled for Saturday, 2 February 2013).
Inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in April 2012, the Los Angeles punk band - as famous for their off-stage antics as their killer on-stage performances - needs little introduction. Having won seven Grammy awards, sold over 80 million records worldwide and engineered 10 studio albums, 46 singles and 44 music videos, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been stealing childhoods and romanticising mosh pits since 1983 with their funk-punk-psychedelica combinations.
Fronted by a lead (Anthony Kiedis) who’s battled with a heroin addiction for the better part of his stardom, and backed by a bass guitarist known merely as ‘Flea’ (fitting, given his high energy, jumpy character), ‘the Peppers’ are the real rock ‘n roll deal. This ain’t no boy band built in a day.
Still, while much of their early music revolved around sex and drugs, their later albums address more profound issues – mortality, desire, spirituality and solitude.
Regardless though, whether you prefer the lyrics that drip from ‘Blood, Sugar, Sex Magik’ (their 1991 album release ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the top 500 albums of all time) or the more sedate and soul-searching ‘By The Way’ (their 2002 album release), once a Chili Peppers fan, always a Chili Peppers fans.
So, in short, local audiences can look forward to a scorching concert in Cape Town, and with zef rap-rave sensation Die Antwoord scheduled as the opening act – the performance will be one of the most high-profile shows in South African history.
