Road closures for Cape Town’s switch-on of the festive lights

An overview on which roads will be closed for the Adderley Christmas lights concert this Sunday

The City’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, will be joined by over 80 000 residents and visitors as she officially kicks off the festive season with a concert starting at 15:30, followed by a carnival parade running until 23:00.

The following roads will be closed in preparation for the event from 09:00 on Thursday 1 December 2011 to 19:00 on Monday 5 December 2011:

· The inside lane of Adderley Street closest to the Cape Town Station

· The outside lane in Strand Street closest to the Cape Town Station

Road closures on the day of the event

The following road closures will be in place to accommodate the crowds of spectators:

From 10:00 to 24:00 on Sunday 4 December 2011 both carriageways of Adderley Street and Heerengracht will be closed between Bureau Street and Hertzog Boulevard. All side streets leading to Adderley Street will be closed and traffic will be diverted.

Closure points from 10:00:

· Adderley and Bureau Streets, Burg and Hout Streets

· St George’s and Riebeeck Streets, Lower Buitenkant and Darling Streets

· Plein and Castle Streets, Long and Riebeeck Streets

· Longmarket and Parliament Streets, Darling Street to Plein Street

· St George’s and Longmarket Streets, Burg and Longmarket Streets

· Longmarket and Plein Streets, Longmarket and Corporation Streets

· Caledon and Parade Streets, Adderley Street and Fountain Circle

· Waterkant and Riebeeck Streets

Closure points from 12:00:

· Adderley and Strand Streets, Long and Strand Streets

· Strand and Lower Buitenkant Streets, Plein and Strand Streets

Closure points from 19:00 for the carnival parade:

· Hans Strydom and Fountain Circle, Hans Strydom and Long Street

· Lower Heerengracht and Sanlam Circle

· Hertzog Boulevard and DF Malan Street

Parking

No parking will be permitted in Adderley Street between 07:00 and 24:00. There will be no access for buses and taxis in Adderley Street. Please use an alternative route.

The City of Cape Town’s annual switch-on of the festive lights will take place at 20:00 on Sunday 4 December 2011 at the Cape Town Station forecourt.
