Chris Bertish completed an unsupported Transatlantic SUP Crossing
Last Update 9 March 2017
South African speaker, big wave surfer and guinness stand up paddle world record holder, Chris Bertish, has become the first person ever to complete a solo, unsupported Transatlantic Standup Paddle (SUP) Crossing. Friday, 9 March 2017 marks the end of the journey for British, after having travelled 7500 km, 93 days and made 1 944 000 strokes to reach the English Harbour, Antigua.
Bertish began his journey on 6 December 2016 departing from Agadir in Morocco, beginning possibly the greatest ocean adventure ever attempted. His SUP board, or rather the ImpiFish as it’s known, reached the shoreline after three months to loud applause and cheers from family, friends, and spectators who had travelled across the world to see the momentous occasion.
On arrival, Bertish quipped that, “If you truly believe in yourself and persevere, anything is possible, and here we are. After over three months solo on the open ocean, I am here, on land again with friends and family. My feelings of accomplishment and extreme gratitude for everyone that made this incredible journey possible are beyond words.”
The SUP Crossing presented by Carrick Wealth has made history, and set a new world record. It is said to continue raising funds for several charitable organisations including The Lunchbox Fund, Operations Smile and Signature of Hope. Bertish has personally committed to funding one child through Operations Smile for every World record he achieved on his Transatlantic journey.
Bertish has been a long time keynote and inspirational speaker who is known internationally for inspiring audiences with tales of determination and courage by sharing skills to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles in the pursuit of dreams.
