There’s nothing like freshly-baked bread with a knob of melting butter, or a flakey, golden croissant filled with chocolate. That’s why we asked our readers what’s the best bakery in their neighbourhood. There’s a coffee shop run by the deaf community, bread shop in Gugulethu, and a pet-friendly café in Kalk Bay (where you can get free croissants). Here are the best bakeries in Cape Town, according to locals.
There’s nothing better than Donny’s koeksisters on a Sunday morning. So says reader Nadine De Mink and 20 others. The husband and wife team sells freshly-baked goods, from mini jam doughnuts to scones and savouries. They’ve even got their own house blend (Donny’s brew). A tip-off from Roxanne Wareley: Coffee between 6.30am and 8.30am gets you a free croissant.
Hours: Monday, 8am to 4pm; Tuesday to Friday, 8am to 5pm; Saturday, 8am to 4pm; Sunday, 8am to 2pm

Coffee, tarts, pastries, and fresh croissants are what locals keep coming back for. If you visit, ask the baristas how to sign your order.

This shop takes the classic doughnut and combines it with traditional desserts, nostalgic South African classics, and French pastries. Think rooibos custard filling and ginger snap cookie caramels. It’s the first of its kind in Gugulethu. Thembile’s Bread Shop has an amazing story of hope and great products, says Liza Du Toit Adlem. After suffering a stroke, Thembile Gcukumeni trained as a baker and opened Thembile's BreadShop where he bakes paninis, healthy bread, ciabatta bread in tins, French baguettes, cheese sticks, focaccia, scones, and Chelsea buns, all in a wood-fired oven.
