The all-day café by the DHL Stadium roundabout
Last updated: 4 November 2024
If there’s one place in Cape Town where you’ll find your brother and his friends having pizza, your cousin watching football in the shisha lounge, and your auntie at the Saturday breakfast buffet, it’s Café Extrablatt. This laidback all-day café also has a kid's play area, weekly food specials, and happy hour five days a week.

Café Extrablatt is hidden in plain sight, you’ve probably driven past it without realising it was there. It’s in the green and white building by the large roundabout across the DHL Stadium. It’s good to know that there’s free parking across the street.
First opened in Germany, Café Extrablatt is now an institution in Cape Town. It serves traditional German dishes like roulade (German rolled beef), currywurst (traditional sausage seasoned with a curry sauce), and köningsberger klopse (meatballs in a creamy white sauce with capers). There’s also pasta, burgers, and grills.

The weekly specials make Café Extrablatt an affordable spot for a regular after-work hangout with friends or colleagues.
Pop by for Monday Madness and take advantage of the pizza special all day (two pizzas for R199.90). And how’s this for a good deal: On Wacky Wednesdays order two burgers, the cheaper one will be free.
And where else in Cape Town can you get a cocktail for R55? Happy hour lasts three hours every weeknight (5pm to 8pm, Monday to Friday). There’s an excellent wine list and craft beer selection, too.

On Saturday and Sunday, you and your crew can dig into the extensive breakfast and brunch buffets (9am to 12pm on Saturdays and 9am to 2pm on Sundays). The buffets include everything from cereals and pastries to meats, cheeses, salads, omelettes and even fresh warm waffles.
It’s ideal for family breakfasts because kids under 10 years old are charged half price. At the back of the café is a colourful kids’ corner, with a punchy superhero mural. Budding Picassos can grab some chalk and decorate the blackboard, or play with the available toys or read books.

While downstairs is lovely for families, upstairs is where you’ll find the shisha lounge, bar and balcony, with top local DJs playing on weekends. There’s two large TV screens showing sports games and hookah pipes with flavours like watermelon, mint cream, cherry and more.
If you’d prefer a more family-friendly atmosphere, or just something quieter, there’s two TVs downstairs as well. Café Extrablatt shows any big sporting events, with a preference for football. It’s one of the only places in Cape Town where you can watch the Fußball Spiele of the German football league, the Bundesliga.
Perhaps next time you’re at the roundabout, park across the street and pop in for a visit. Remember, it doesn't matter who you’re with - your granny, friends, niece or nephew, weird uncle…Everyone is welcome at Café Extrablatt.
