Legend has it that motorcycles were made for hairy, hard-fisted, menacing men. Outlaws.
The type of free-wheeling, morally bankrupt blokes who find glory in stealing the accountant’s daughter and disappearing into the night, never to be seen again.
We disagree. Motorbikes were made for conquering Cape Town’s roads.
You may have sped down German autobahns, toured Route 66 in America and hugged tight to the Great Ocean Road in Australia, but until you’ve snarled around the Mother City’s Chapman’s Peak Drive, off-roaded amongst the arid moonscapes and towering rock formations in the Cederberg mountains and torn up the tarmac revving along South Africa’s (SA) magnificent passes, you’ve failed to do your duty as a diehard motorbiker.
And while only the smallest handful of visitors to Cape Town and greater SA have the luxury of arriving with their trusty, growling steed at their side, the majority who aren’t so lucky can turn to Cape Bike Travel. Operating since 2005, this motorcycle specialist rents out Harley-Davidsons, BMWs and Ducatis to fully licensed (over 21-year-old) riders keen to explore the open roads of Southern Africa.
We can guarantee the outfit stocks a damned nice fleet of mean machines too, and owner and founder Jörg Vogel, who commands a pretty tricked-out Harley himself, is more than happy to recommend the best beast for everything from cruising the city for a few hours to overlanding up to Victoria Falls or the deserts of Namibia for a longer holiday.
TIP: Contact Cape Bike Travel and ask Jorg for their current specials for CapetownMagazine.com readers; he always gives something extra for you, we guarantee.
