From Margate braaied chicken curry to roti gatsbys, Ragamuffin Curry is changing the (curry) game
If you’ve ever visited the Blue Bird Garage Market in Muizenberg during the winter months, chances are that you’ve opted for a curry. That enticing aroma of cardamom, turmeric, garlic, cumin and fenugreek wafting around the market on a cold Friday night is hard to ignore. The source of it? Ragamuffin Curry, and those in the know have ritualistically been heading there for curry every week. But that was up until recently.
Now you don’t need to travel to Muizenberg.
Tucked in between two unlikely neighbours, a pharmacy and a post office, is the new permanent home of Ragamuffin Curry, a 20-seater unpretentious restaurant. What we have here is a neighbourhood curry den, where the quality – and affordability – of the food overshadows its low-key setting.
YOU GET CURRY, AND THEN YOU GET CURRY
Here you'll find conventional curry dishes along the lines of butter chicken, chicken korma and Durban mutton curry. And most of these go for under R100 for a medium (read: hearty) portion. But where else in Cape Town could you find fried chicken curry? Margate curry with braaied chicken? Yes, it's a thing. Just don't go to Margate and ask for this dish because they'll have no idea what you're talking about.
All mains come with rice, sambals and a free vegetarian curry on the side – because having curry with your curry is how things are done here.
Every Tuesday is Bunny Chow day. A half loaf of freshly-baked bread, hollowed out and filled with your choice of Durban mutton, Margate chicken or butter dahl curry.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CROSS INDIAN AND CAPE CUISINE?
A roti gatsby of course. And the large size goes for R50. Filled with double-fried chips, sriracha mayo, tomato ketchup and cheese, it’s what happens when a dish from the India collides with a Cape Town classic. Other lunch items you can take away or sit down to enjoy include wraps like falafel and Indian-fried chicken.
Ragamuffin Curry is open seven days a week, from 11am – 9pm.
