Sunday, the day of rest. However, thanks to the world-class wine regions on our doorstep, Sundays in Cape Town have become synonymous with setting out on road trips to explore the multitude of wine farms dotted around the region.
Here’s our pick of great wine tasting destinations for Sundays.
For those looking to take a scenic drive through the historic Paarl wine region, Under Oaks is a favourite for Sunday tastings. The farm produces three different ranges of wine to discover, namely the Britz Brothers, Bla Bla Bla and Under Oaks Private Cellar.
Tasting: Standard: R40/p for five Under Oaks wines.
Premium: R60/p for four premium wines.
Heritage pairing: R95/p for five wines paired with various snacks. It’s best to book this pairing in advance.
Tip: Groups of eight or more people need to book in advance.
Hours: February to October: 11am–4pm, November to January: 9am–4pm

This quaint Stellenbosch farm dates back to 1693 and is most famed for its Shiraz and Cape Dutch-themed accommodation. For a Sunday wine tasting experience, visit for the unusual pairing of wine drinking and game viewing
Tasting: Guinea fowl: R35/p for four wines.
Private collection: R50/p for six wines.
Chocolate and wine pairing: R60/p for three wine and three chocolate tastings.
Safari: R250/p for the private collection pairing, a cheese platter including three different kinds of cheese, olives, figs, droewors and more. This tasting is hosted in the camp area where you’ll be able to observe zebra, wildebeest, springbok and guinea fowl. Please note: A minimum of two people are needed to secure booking.
Tip: No booking is required for the normal tastings, but the Safari requires booking 24 hours in advance.
Hours: 10am–6pm, with the last booking being taken at 5:30pm.

DE GRENDEL WINE ESTATE
De Grendel Wine Estate, tucked away in the Durbanville Hills wine region, a 25-minute drive out of the city, sports an elegant alfresco tasting area and a gourmet on-site restaurant. The estate stretches out over almost 220 hectares on the fynbos-covered slopes of Tygerberg Hill.
Tasting: Premium: R60/p for five wines.
Flagship: R80/p for five wines.
Tip: Wine tasting is free for De Grendel Loyalty Club members and a guest. To join, you need to buy 12 bottles of wine.

DORNIER WINE ESTATE
This Stellenbosch wine estate is known for experimenting with blends of wine to give their patrons something new and delicious to enjoy. The result? Excellent wines which you can enjoy by the bottle at their signature restaurant, take it home or enjoy some Sunday wine tasting.
Tasting: R50/p for six wines of the day. Bookings are required for groups of six or more.
Tip: There’s also a cellar tour at R50/p.

KLEINE ZALZE WINERY
The tasting room at Kleine Zalze is open seven days a week. However, opt for a Sunday drive into the picturesque wine region between Stellenbosch and Somerset West where this estate lies. Boasting award-winning wines bursting with flavour and aroma, tasting takes place in Kleine Zalze’s historic Cellar Door along with an informative briefing about their range.
Tasting: R15/p for three wines and R25/p for five wines.
Tip: You get to choose the wines you’d like to taste.

NITIDA WINE FARM
Nitida may be small in comparison to neighbouring wine farms, but they compensate with a deliciously popular wine selection. After 25 years in the wine industry, this boutique Durbanville Hills winery has established itself as one of South Africa’s most loved boutique wine cellars. The wine tasting room is open seven days a week, but every Sunday there’s a large crowd and bustling atmosphere.
Tasting: Classic: R30/p for a choice of four wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah.
Artisanal: R60/p for a choice of four wines, Wild Child, Coronata Integration, The Tinkery, Calligraphy or Matriarch.
Tip: Group tastings of ten or more people are R50/p for the classic tasting and R80/p for the artisanal tasting – these have to be booked in advance.
