Cape Town International Day of Yoga was created to showcase yoga to the uninitiated, unite the initiated and, most importantly, offer yoga to less privileged youths in Cape Town.
The project, a collaboration between Earthchild Project and Yoga instructor Joelle Sleebos’s Dharma Project, does this by raising funds for yoga programmes at schools in underprivileged communities.
The event takes place a day after the International Yoga Day on 22 June 2019 at 14 Hope Street in Gardens.
WHAT HAPPENS AT DAY OF YOGA?
The event is like a yoga festival with morning and afternoon yoga sessions and a market selling yoga-related items such as sports bras, mats and pants among other things.
There will also be a raffle in support of the Earthchild Project where you can win anything from free yoga classes and yoga props among other things.
WHO IS JOELLE SLEEBOS?
Sleebos is a well-known yoga instructor from the Netherlands, based in Cape Town, who organises the Cape Town Day Of Yoga. She does private and group yoga sessions, yoga workshops, teacher training and organises connection retreats.
The International Yoga Day is Sleebos’ Dharma Project, an initiative that allows an instructor to give back to the community without receiving anything in return.
WHAT IS THE EARTHCHILD PROJECT?
The Earthchild Project is an organisation aimed at uplifting children in underprivileged communities through yoga, gardening and hiking.
They’ve put weight behind their yoga programme, seeing it as an important activity for children. They are currently involved in eight schools from Lavender Hill and Khayelitsha, working within the school system by placing instructors at the schools.
According to Earthchild Project, the benefits of yoga for children are:
● Concentration
● Self-confidence
● Body-awareness
● Self-love
● Kindness and compassion
