Bashews celebrates their 40th anniversary
Many Capetonians will agree that Bashew’s fall into the list of true Capetonian culture.
Bashew’s, the oldest soft drinks company in the Cape dating back to 1899, celebrates the 40th anniversary of its iconic returnable glass bottle that still delivered from door-to-door today in the famous wooden crates.
While some like sipping their cocktails in trendy bars, others prefer an ice cold bottle of Bashew’s on their unkempt front stoep.
For me, it was a must after Mommy’s spicy curry, the corner café’s full house gatsby or to satisfy my thirst on eid. Bashew’s is more than a soft drink, it’s a culture.
When I now see the Bashew’s bakkie, I can’t help but feel a tad bit nostalgic. So many memories of my childhood lie in a bottle of Bashew’s. My most vivid being the colour stained ‘moustaches’ my cousins and I would show off after knocking back our soft drinks.
Today old school bottles and crates adorn trendy fashion stores, restaurants and delicatessens - Bashew’s has become a true cape icon in its own right, inspiring decades of joy and laughter in people from all walks of life.
