Inside this colourful cosy little ice cream shop in Sea Point
Of all the Ice Cream Parlours in Cape Town, especially in Sea Point, only one would get Willy Wonka’s stamp of approval. Crumbs & Cream.
Inside this cosy little shop are streaks and splatters of primary hues, a swing set and catchy upbeat music. The only thing that rivals this quirky ice cream shop in Sea Point are the outrageous creations, where the ice cream choices are as colourful as the paint splattered tables and couches.
Crumbs and Cream is famous for its decadent and OTT ice-cream sandwiches. Because ice cream in a cone or cup can be so pedestrian, wouldn't you agree? Its ice-cream sandwiches are very creamy Italian gelato squished between two cookies with a hefty drizzle of chocolate or spread of Nutella, and a sprinkling of hundreds and thousands or rainbow sprinkles, a topping of vanilla fudge or mini mallows.
One ice-cream sandwich in particular is a showstopper: the Nutella/BarOne Donut cookie with Oreo Monster ice cream squished in the middle.
The joy of the place is that customers can make up a new combination every time they visit: just choose the cookies, the ice cream that will bind them together, and then the toppings (the savoury ones, like crushed nuts, take it to another level).
Quirky is why so many patrons flock to Crumbs and Cream, a family business by sisters Or Lahat and Shahar Ben Artzi started in 2016. Capetonians have taken to it so enthusiastically, there is another shop at the V&A Waterfront, and Crumbs & Cream treats are available at selected petrol stations in Blouberg and Durbanville.
The Crumbs & Cream shop in Sea Point is where couples pop in for dessert after dinner, where parents walk in with their kids and gaggles of teenagers drop in. It’s the kind of place that turns an outing for an ice cream into an occasion.
Besides the ice cream, people come back for the vivacious vibe. The interior is filled with bright yellow, pink, blue, orange and green; the music is energetic and catchy, and the shop – when we don’t have lockdown regulations – is open until midnight.
“People have supper and have a few drinks, then they come over for dessert,” says Or.
During the day children love the store's interactive swing set which doubles as a table setting, and for teens and teens-at-heart the entire place is infinitely Instagram-worthy.
Even those who don't have a particularly sweet tooth will find satisfaction. "For someone who doesn't have a sweet tooth, like me I choose the Nutella chocolate-chip, ice-cream sandwich,” says co-owner Nadav Lahat.
It's a chocolate-chip cookie filled with a Nutella centre inside and a brownie cookie on the other side with a vanilla ice cream in the middle. “So nothing too fancy, just like all the flavours together makes happiness in your mouth."
The ice-cream bar has alternative dietary options, too: sugar-free, vegan or banting ice-cream that are as creamy as their sugared-up counterparts. Like the Vegan Heaven cookie sandwich, which has a scoop of refreshing wildberry, mango, lemon or granadilla-and-mango sorbet.
Crumbs & Cream has stacked a lot more sweet delights into the menu and onto their creamy creations. Their classic milkshake is topped with a donut, scoop of ice cream and drizzle of chocolate sauce. On top of that is an ice-cream sandwich, another scoop of ice cream and a final topping of a tiny ice cream cone pressed into the top, and finally sprinkles.
Because nothing at Crumb & Cream comes in half measures.
