Market Theatre's tribute to Sophiatown's painful past
The Market Theatre in Johannesburg is planning to reprise its compelling show "Sophiatown."
The Market Theatre in Johannesburg is planning to reprise its compelling show "Sophiatown." (from August 29 to October 9, 2005).
Sophiatown used to be a vibrant community in the area of Johannesburg, until it was ruthlessly destroyed by the Apartheid regime. Sophiatown had to move, to make place for white people. The same happened to Cape Town's District Six.
Sophiatown is a powerful symbol of the humaneness that flows strongly in the veins of all Africans. Based on an entertaining recollection of a true event, leading up to the tragic removals and relocations in Sophia Town, the play throbs with the soul of a unique collection of people whose resilience dealt with colour considerations through incalculable love and tolerance.
The wonderful combination of exuberance, musicality, pathos and nostalgia present in the play ‘Sophiatown', makes it an invigorating and uplifting theatrical experience.
The production of Sophiatown won many awards and has performed across South Africa, Europe and America.
